Now that I'm building up a ride, I'm itching to race it. I need something relatively close to washington DC; anyone know any sites? How do you know these things?

Find a couple of the local racing teams in your area. go to their web sites and look for their race calendars. There may also be a link to "race series" or other cycling organizations who will also post links or race calendars.

On another note - how do you get a one day race pass? IF I register on bikereg.com I can do that instead of getting the $60 full pass. Where do I buy the one day pass?

When I did 1 day licenses, I would just pay for it at the race itself - like an extra $10. But for some reason I thought you could pay the extra fee through Bikereg.com as well.

Since you're in DC, check out the MABRA race calendar. Pretty much everything local to you is on there.

bikereg.com is where I usually look for races in the DC area.
the mabra site and listserv also help notify me of any races not posted there.
You can buy 1 day licenses on site on race day but sometimes they will be offered through bikereg.com when you prereg for the race.

I just signed up for the capital 'cross classic as under 19 (i'm 16) so this should be fun. Convinced a friend to do it as well! December 6 at 9 am. For catagory I left it blank - I guess that's right? I'm really looking forward to this! I mountain and road bike, so this is the best of both. Hope everything i'm ordering for the bike comes in on time, or i'll be riding the mountain bike. Either way, I think it will be great, as long as I don't DNF.

I used that to sign up. I just realized my friend who's racing with me has disc brakes on his mountain bike.. are those legal in the race?

disc brakes are fine. What parts are you waiting for on the cross bike? A mountain bike is perfectly fine for your first cross race though.
for category you could just put 4 or i guess jr is there is an option for that. Are you going to do the junior or cat 4 race?
