Advocacy & Safety - 461

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

At the moment, the "Air Quality Index" for Atlanta is 461, according to the Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Air Pollution Standard Reporting System (Whew! That was a mouthful!)
0 to 50 is, "Good." 50 to 100 is, "Moderate." 100 to 150 is, "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups." 150 - 200 is, "Unhealthy." Etc.
"461?" Who are they kidding? Somethings fried in the system. Our skin would be burning off.
When I logged on to the EPA Airnow internet reporting system, I found that we never really got much over 150 today. In fact, between 4 and 6, we dipped well under 100.
Computers. Gotta love 'em.

461, yeah you'd know it. I'm just wondering what all the bushfire smoke and dust storms we had in the drought would make it. I reckon one particular dust storm I rode through would have cleared 500.

"461" means you have to whip out your Leatherman to cut thru the smog....
Depending on which site I consult, you are showing "moderate" on particulates and either "good" or "moderate" on O3. We are still in prime season for photochemical smog, which can generate sulfate and nitrate particulates (nasty stuff) in addition to O3 and NO2. Particulates also arise from diesel exhaust, coal burning, excavation dust, and forest fires.

Thank goodness a "cold front" blasted through Atlanta and gave us fresh air and cooler temps, highs in the low 80's today. After brief thunderstorms yesterday (what a wet, refreshing ride!) we had an amazing day today.
(Tonight will set record lows, below 60.)
Ahhhh....

it has been cold lately here, rain and a wisp of cold air, I think summer is going.....
Back during college, we had air monitoring stations around the school.
We'd go up to the biochem lab, get some spore samples, and dust them all over the collector funnel.
Could be those punk kids again.
