Ha, I was wondering why I never heard any of those bands before. I am going to have to invest in buying a cd carrying case, I have seen them in some stores you can clip the case to your shorts or pants or whatever it is that you are wearing and you can place your cd player or tape player inside with it silpping out. Some nice rock music usually gets me pumped up, but I gotta watch out where I use it, don't want to be on a busy street and not know who or what is behind you.

I use a cd. I have everything from showtunes (Grease) to orchestra (Stravinsky) to rock (Styx) to R & B (Mary J. Blige). I like to keep my genres varied.

I listen to the cars coming up behind me. I used to listen to music, but realized it was a bad idea not to have the sonar/radar my ears give me. They tell me when to look and make sure that the car behind me isn't going to run into my rear wheel...

Usually I keep it low enough so I can hear the road and the music

True- I don't listen to music one squat when I'm riding the paths. I ride early in the morning (3:30- 3:45am start), and I keep my volume low enough to hear what's going on around me. I always put the headsets on, then I snap my fingers. If I can't hear the snap, it's too loud.

When I'm on the road, there's no music. If anything, I'll put the headphones around my neck and turn it up. I can barely hear anything unless the traffic is light, but that's ok. I should be listening for cars in heavy traffic. I am thinking about getting a speaker so I can listen to music on days when I'm doing long rides (more than 50 miles) and I'm alone. It can get a bit isolating.

I listen to the street. Music is for dumb yuppies or death wishers in the city.

Wow--other people who listen to music on the bike too! I swear I'm the only one in this area who does. They make the argument of not being able to hear road noise, etc. But I also make sure I can hear road noise with the 'phones in. I have an IPOD and I tend to put a lot of high-energy stuff on it--some heavy metal, lots of hard rock and classical rock--anything that helps get the adrenaline up. Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Aerosmith, ELP, Nazareth, etc. I draw the line at Pink Floyd, though. Great band, but too depressing to listen to on a bike.

Well, bless your heart, honey. But I'm not dumb, I'm not a yuppy, and more importantly, I'm not dead. And the music works just fine for me, especially when I'm riding alone. Keeps things from getting monotonous, and helps keep me focused. To each his or her own.

Well, bless yours right back. Stay out of my sight with your headphones on. It is probably the worst possible thing to wear in an active urban environment. If you are not in a large city - I will disregard your attitude. To each his/her own indeed.

Got over my headphone habit years ago, but when I did it was blues or folksy rock--Fabulous Thunderbirds, Paul Butterfield, Los Lobos, Cris Williamson--my regulars. Wrenching music--Mendelsohn, Brahms, Howlin' Wolf. I'm hooked on a 2 CD Byrds collection for wheel building lately.
