I'm planning on getting a bike for my girlfriend who's about 5'4"

my budget is no higher than 400. so my options at this point are bikesdirect bikes. or i was thinking about buying a frame and building it up since i already have some parts that i wouldn't have to buy. i just don't know much about which frames are good at 200 or less.

the parts i would need to buy are a new saddle and seatpost, bottom bracket cranks chainring and pedals.

Get a BD bike. You'll have a complete, and some cash left over to make it "hers".

Your lady wants to see your skills as a mechanic- get an old frame and build it up. (Or just get a BD bike, which is also a good way to go)

Consider this my obligatory "look what I built" picture posting:

TaCo is a hypocorism for my wife using the first letters of her first and last name. She hates it but it amuses me and I'm the one who was paying to have the vinyl cut. Every girl dreams of havign a "Pink TaCoCycle" to let the world know how classy they are. :)

wasn't there a thread exactly like this a couple weeks ago? I think the guy decided on a Kilo from BD but then didn't have the cash in the end so still in holding.

And she doesn't ride it, right? Because pink taco also means something else... :D

I suppose I should take some photos of the bike I built for my gf. Now, she didn't actually need a new bike, or even want one, but I happened to find a nice mixte frame, and I was just itching for a new project.
