I've got a circa 1986 Univega Gran Turismo in my basement that I'd like to convert to either a Ss or FG ride. The bike has a 6 spd freewheel on it (rear dropout spacing is 126mm). What are my options since I don't have a cassette hub on the rear wheel? The wheels are really nice on this bike, 42 spokes and very strong, so if possible, I'd really llke to use the rear wheel. Should I hunt around for a cassette hub that can accommodate 42 spokes? thanks!

If the current backwheel is really nice, I'd almost suggest you just keep it intact and use it later on something else when you need a geared wheel. If you do insist on using the back wheel, you can probably just use the original hub too, and get everything respaced and redished and add a thread-on single-speed freewheel.. This would only work (safely) for single speed. For fixed, you'd ideally want a reverse threaded lockring, and you'd need a new hub for that.
