Track Cycling: Velodrome Racing and Training Area - Cancellara sets sights on hour record

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just want to see the bike they'll build him for it.

Assuming he does it fairly soon I'm sure it'll just be a modified Shiv.
"just" a Shiv...ha!

I doubt it. Presumably, he is chasing after the Merckx record, not the "best human effort" one. If this is the case, the Shiv will be disallowed and he'll be forced onto a bike with round tubing, box-section rims, etc. Then it'll be interesting to see what they come up with for him.

Interesting in what way? The current world record holder only got to screw around with position due to his ginormous height which is a known advantage under the current UCI rules in terms of getting into a nice aero tuck in the drops.
I expect Spartacus to ride a 1980's Shogun road conversion with matching colored knc chain and rims and still break the record by a good 500m or so.
Better yet an inch-pitch setup on his grandpa's track bike and shoes from NOS ebay auction from the 70's.:roflmao2::thumb::cry:

Interesting in that it will be an interesting and cool, custom, one-off track bike made for a rider we all really admire. I can't believe I have to explain this.

didn't this guy ride his test bike and say it's to unconfortable and decide not to do the hour record?

Didn't Boardman beat Merckc's record by a couple of hundred meters?

That was Obree. Different guy.
No matter who currently holds it, it'll still be known as the Merckx record.

It has been beat by numerous riders, but the hour record has been split between a "Best Human Effort" category and a "UCI Hour Record," colloquially known as the "Merckx" record.

it is not quite clear whether he wants to do the merkcx record or the one with aero equipment, since on his website, they are comparing his time in the world championship TT,obviously an aero gear race, to the merkcx record.
the problem is the one with aero equipment race, is that boardman's position was banned, but his record still holds.

The hour record really shows how absolutely awesome Eddy Merckx was. He set the record in 72 and held it outright until 2000, 28 years, when Boardman beat him by just 10 meters! I would call that almost a draw. Merckx's record wasn't significantly surpassed until 2005, when Sosenka beat him by 269 meters, or a little over 1 lap of an olympic track.

Merckx did an amazing job in Mexico City and I can understand why UCI brought these regulations back, but there are some huge advantages in attacking the world record on altitude. I lost the bookmark with the facts. but it seems an hour attempt in Mexico City (or Bolivia, the highest track??) will give you a 1 mile advantage. Can anyone tell me why no attempts were made there lately? Are the tracks in such a bad condition?
Nice to know the extreme low weight of the bike Merckx rode back then. http://www.wolfgang-menn.de/hourrec.htm
Also nice to google the comments by bike builder Ernesto Colnago about this atttempt!

The UCI really needs to re-visit the regulations so shorter riders aren't penalized so heavily, especially WRT to saddle setback.

Yeah, tell me about it. I'm 5'-3" with a 28" inseam, so I need the morphological exemption to be able to put my saddle in a reasonable position. Fortunately, I don't do the pursuit or TTs, so it's not too big a problem, but I'd definitely be at a disadvantage in that type of event.
