Anyone know anything about these? Custom job, or limited edition release? I would dearly love a pair...
Cheers!

why not powder coat a set...
Are they powdercoated by an individual then? I thought they may have been anodised. So, the part of the flange that has the DA logo is removable, I presume ..

i dont know what the story is with those, but ive never seen them before so my guess is it would be easier/cheaper to powder coat a set. anodized would be better, but not as cheap. i dont think they would be too hard to take apart, shimano got them together. i know record hubs come apart with ease.
yeah, powdercoat, then lacuqer.
fanks!

I actually tried to get a set of da hubs powder coated blue when I was building a wheel set.
But for one, that insert isn't easy to get out. It's glued in pretty good. I just ended up scratching it and putting some indents in the side.
And secondly the thickness of powder coat will not allow a spoke to go through the spoke wholes.
Anodizing is the way to go for hubs. It's lighter and durability isn't an issue for a hub since nothing ever touches it.

+1, although anodizing does take off a very very small amount of metal.

I hear ya, but I don't know anywhere that does anodising near me. It's also a fair bit dearer than powdercoating.Plus, the DA logo insert would still need to be removed! As for the spoke holes, I think you could solve this by filing the holes with a very small jewellers file before it gets treated. Also, the logo may be easier to remove if you apply heat to it, with a hairdryer for example, then pick at it with a razor blade/tiny flat screwdriver.

is somebody selling those inserts? I would consider buying new ones cause I ruined my front inserts with jasco paint remover. Sorta baked them so they are all bubbly and opaque now.

I'd think that powdercoating hubs would affect diameter of a spoke hole, making it difficult to properly fit a spoke without chipping or filing off excess paint.

i would cut a spoke up and plug the holes. this should let the color get everywhere but the inside of the hole

the spoke bits would be powdercoated as well and end up stuck in there nicely. source: personal experiences from powdercoating.

Those are custom. As far as the hub caps, those are custom made by a Tokyo bike shop.

Surely a decent powdercoater would know how to either seal off the spoke holes or open them back up afterward. This cannot be an uncommon problem with powdercoating.

I went to Dreamworks today. Asked about the black Dura-Ace hubs and the guy said he doesn't have any, but he wants some!!! The hubs with the stars cost ¥38,000. the regular Dura-Ace hubs cost ¥20,050. I took some photos for posterity.

i was reading on a blog about those hub dust caps as they were being called, although they aren't for dust lol. And they are just originals that have been removed from the hub with a hairdryer and knife, the black paint was sanded off the back, and they were repainted. Anyone with a little motivation could do it themselves, and I think they are a really nice little touch. I will probably do it to mine if I don't attempt to drill them out and polish them. this is just so sexy, and if it were polished...
