Bicycle Mechanics - My Bike Mechanic Rides 14,000 miles a year.

How many miles does your bike mechanic ride each year?

A guy riding 14k/year spends a lot of hours in the saddle, I don't understand how anyone can have so much free time.:eek:

Bicycles are simple devices so I do all my own work. Unfortunately, family and work precludes spending as much time on the bike as I would like so my yearly mileage is embarrassingly low these days - maybe 3k/year.

Being retired is fun... He rides six days a week.

Are you making the implication that al those miles somehow make him a better mechanic?

I can relate, although I'd hardly call 3000 miles/year embarrassing; I bought my bike last spring and have so far only clocked about 300 miles. If I can work my way up to 3000 I will be ecstatic!

Does "his mechanic" also believe that lightweight riders need to keep their tires at 110 psi or suffer major risk of pinch flats?

How many different bikes does this mechanic work on in a year? Personally, I work on 14,000 bikes per year and do 14,000 miles per year in test rides. I don't have time to ride my own bikes.:lol:

Oh, he's a guy that works on your bike, not someone that works 8 hours a day, I guess that can be done. His average miles per riding day is just about 45. That's pretty crazy.

Well, I'm my own bike mechanic, and on pace to ride about that this year.. and I'm not retired :)

I average 10-12K miles a year on the bike and my record is 15,350 miles in one year. I work a full-time job and, if you count the commute (I don't commute by bike), I spend 11 to 12 hours a day at work. I'm not proud...it's my escape from reality. As far as the 15k year...I'll never do that again...shear stupidity. One day I'll grow up and get a life.

that's what I assumed too. but not bragging in a bad way. I'm my own mechanic, and I wouldn't mind having the sort of time on my hands to ride 14,000 miles per year.

My old mechanic does like a dozen two centuries per year. Uncountable centuries. Rides to work every day, races on weekends with his team.. Seems he said, he's logged in over a million miles since he was a kid.

He must be very old. At 20K miles per year (almost 400 miles/week yr round), that would take 50 years to accomplish

He is just sharing some info, it seems to have no real point other then its a lot of miles to the average cyclist. I'm impressed, good for him/you 10wheels. Good times and happy pedaling all.

Think he's in his mid 40's by now. The number of double centuries he does in a years time is amazing.. Maybe he mean't it was his life's goal.?

Um. 14,000 miles/365 days = 38 some-odd miles per day, or more if you take weekends out of the equation. I know people whose commute is 20 miles or more one way. It would not be difficult for an avid cyclist to ride 14,000 miles in a year if they were doing a long commute out and back, if they were doing some recreational riding on weekends and/or a long distance ride every year plus training for it.

39 miles a day...no big deal, especially if he has a long commute each day. ;)

My old commute was 26 miles one way.. I commuted by bike about 50 percent of the time...If only it had been a flat ride , Maybe I'd commuted 3/4's of the time...

I would love to meet this guy. I bet he adjusts his derailleur screws while riding. And yes, you don't have ride that much to be an excellent mechanic. It's like chicken soup to a dead man, it can't hurt.

i recall back in the racing days in the 80s doing 12-14k a year, bout a thou a month, sometimes more....

Get Jobst Brandt's book "the Bicycle Wheel". a truing stand, a tensiometer, a dishing gauge and go for it. It is definately not an art, just a simple mechanical job. I taught a retired school teacher how to do it and even more impresive to me was the chemical engineer who I taught how.

Thanks, I've had my eye on that book for a while. I just haven't had time to make the purchases of guidance and tooling.

I did come very close with one wheel using pitch, but it had a "hop" in it and I "screwed-the-pooch" trying to get it out.

A damaged rim is tough to deal with. I had a riding buddy who was hit by a truck mirror (he's OK now) that screwed up his front wheel. I took it apart and using my weight and boards as pivots managed to get it close. I couldn't get even tension on the spokes, but it was reasonably true and rideable. He uses it as a temporary spare.
BTW I am TW's mech. I was a weldor, pipefitter, boilermaker in the real world and enjoy working with my hands. I like working on bikes because hey are relatively simple.
I have ridden 205 days this year and averaged about 65 miles per ride.

I'm a bike mechanic and I rode less that 500km this year. Living on my bike for 20+ years l'm burnt out of riding. Only short rides for me now.
