Winter Cycling - Lizard Skins Grunge Guard

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Unfortunately, Lizard Skins doesn't seem to be making their Grunge Guard any more:

Does anyone know of any company that carries a similar product? The bike that I'll be using to commute with this winter has a rear derailleur system and I'd like to keep its inherent problems to a minimum.

If all else fails, consider making your own from a heavy-duty plastic bag and a couple zip-ties. Not pretty, but it'll keep your parallelogram from getting clogged with slush.

It is a good product, which probably explains why they aren't being made any more. It took me better than three months to find one for my bike, Thank the Gods for yard sales.

Actually, Vivo began making grunge guards for front and rear dérailleurs first, beginning in the 90s. (The Lizard Skin models looked almost identical; I don't know if there's been a patent dispute in North America between the 2 companies.) The Vivo grunge guards aren't readily available, either. However, keep your eyes open for periodic sales on ebay (some were available in June) or other auction sites, especially those in Europe. Here's a link to a German bike forum where a member was selling some new Vivo grunge guards. You might email him and see if he still has any or knows where you can get them. http://bikemarkt.mtb-news.de/bikemarkt/showproduct.php?product=206677 Good luck.
