Road Cycling - Weird Computer Malfunction

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have a Cateye Enduro 8 computer on my bike.
Yesterday after I ride I was logging my info and it showed the Max Speed: 143.0 (that's M/H)
I thought: "WTF???" anyway the actually max time was 31.5 m/h
Today the computer was working fine again.
Anyone have any ideas as to what was wrong with it?? It's pretty new, just about 4 months old now.

Thanks for pointing my mistake out, I did mean speed, not time.
Don't you mean max speed? Anyways, these things can happen if you encounter stray EM emissions. The speed sensor is typically a reed-relay that gets tripped by a magnet. If you run across a fairly high-rate pulsed magnetic field, it will throw off your computer for a small bit of time. Traffic sensors being mainly metal detectors will do this for instance. Metal detectors typically work by inducing a magnetic field in a body of metal and then reading the response in field flux. Here's my favourite result of encountering a traffic sensor...

Holy crap, that's just like what happened to my computer. Thanks for the info.
How come only the speed gets affected though? Never mind, I think I get it. I wonder where the sensor was though, because it's never happened before. (I did ride down to midtown though and probably passed one).

Happens to mine if I ever leave it lying in the house beside my mobile phone if its switched on.
WEIRD!! I never had that happen to mine yet...but I wish it would so I could brag as to how fast I can go!!!!!!!!!!!!
G'day.
My S720 goes beserk if I ride under tram lines.......HR, Speed, Cadence, everything. But I must admit its a buzz to be riding down the rode while the computer says 226.7 kmh,
cheers,

While stopped at a stoplight, you can actually watch your cordless speedometer racing. It is actually a pretty good way to find the sensor. If my speedometer reads between 20 and 40 mph, my crank is usually above the sensor, and I can trip the light.

Man, you must be pretty strong to pull that off  I would be happy if I could go that fast -100
