Using my AOL browser I get exactly nothing when posting a new thread. Also nothing with IE. However, FireFox does work for posting a new thread. (Doesn't surprise me.)

I guess I don't understand why one would design a forum for which folks need a browser other than IE to view, and then folks are joyful at finally figuring out a way to participate in the forum by changing browsers???

Seems to me this is assbackwards.

In any event, I am now doing pretty well tih IE on the new forums. I don't like some features, and my subscribed threads screen is still blank, but I have figured out a way to get around that.

I would guess that in about a month it will be pretty smooth.

Has anyone EVER heard of a software update - in any business - that actually went smoothly?

In my case, I've been using Firefox for a couple of years. It just happened that the new forum software initially worked better with that browser. I seriously doubt that the forum was intended to require one poular browser over another.

I think your last sentence is the key. Software updates ALWAYS have glitches. I have no doubt that the admins will get the bugs worked out and things will work as well or better than before.

As a dedicated Firefox user, I am glad to see a website which does not tell me to use IE, instead.

Well, Firefox supports the W3C standards (http://www.w3.org/) better than IE, so perhaps if Microsoft paid more attention to accepted standards there wouldn't be a problem.

Another way of saying the same thing is that "Your favorite browser is a miracle of development in adverse conditions."

If you want some fun, go to one of the text browser viewers like Yellowpipe for a hint of what your favorite pages look like in plain old http. For more giggles, tell your favorite browser to View Source.

Couldn't be more incorrect. You say "...accepted standards". Well, according to just about every measure IE by Microsoft has around 90% of the market. That is about as accepted as you can get. Especially true when one considers there have been alternatives available for years; none of which has been able to achieve even close market penetration. Despite the cries of a minority and the promolgation of "standards" by some, the using public including both private and commercial interests has endorsed IE. In fact today, if your product doesn't work with IE you have limited your market significantly, perhaps fatally.

As it applies to this board if it doesn't work satisfactorily under IE it is taking a very big risk with its' future. Even asking someone to download, install and configure a separate browser on a temporary basis flies in the face of reality and reason.

I've been out of the loop for a few days. I see issues with IE have not been resolved. Still can't start new thread, can't edit Avitar unless I go in through Firefox.

The most current stats I have are from last month with IE at 64.64% of market share. Though it's share is declining, the large IE user base combined with Microsoft practices does make IE a continuing problem for developers all over the world. Microsoft's participation, along with 340 other organizations in the World Wide Web Consortium is making a positive difference, but standards are still a work in progress and compliance has been incomplete.

On the ground, it's a good practice to have at least a couple browsers ready for times when a favorite site and favorite browser are not working well together. It's also good practice to keep browsers updated for reasons of both function and security.

You probably can. but just haven't learned the <TAB> trick yet. What's happening (to me, at least) is that the new thread page is being rendered as a massively wide page. The dialogue box where you can enter the thread info is centered on the really wide page, so you don't see it at first. Try hitting TAB a few times and you suddenly be positioned in the right spot on the page to start a thread.

Hey, thaks for that. I was trying to see it all by scrolling, and I guess I was missing it. Hit the tab button a couple of times and there it was.
That's not the cure for the Edit Avatar problem though. I just get a blank there.
But, the Maple Leafs will have to replay last night's performance a few more times before I look to change my avatar anyways.

Web sites should be designed so they work in any browser. Testing accessibility in all browsers should be standard before releasing a web site.

Web sites should be designed so they work in any browser. Testing accessibility in all browsers should be standard before releasing a web site.

Even when the browser universe is limited to the most popular three or four, this worthy goal cannot be closely approximated except for sites that are either simple in the extreme or give developers the rare combination of time, resources, and final design/function veto power.

Closed source apps like IE are a particular problem. When, not if, something breaks with FF, developers have ready access to source code and can eventually figure out the sources of problems. When, again not if, something breaks with IE, diagnostic resources are limited to those either released by MS or inferred by the community.

Which version of IE are you using? Some other boards I frequent have problems with IE8. Their help area says:

If you are using IE8 and are having problems with posting pictures, using smilies etc with either posts or your signature, you may need to switch to Compatibility View (http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/08/27/introducing-compatibility-view.aspx) . The developers will be making yuku compatible with IE8, but until then, you may need to use Compatibility View.

Internet Explorer 8 is a new release and some websites may not yet be ready for Internet Explorer 8. Click the Compatibility View toolbar button to display the website as viewed in Internet Explorer 7, which will correct display problems like misaligned text, images, or text boxes. This option is on a per site basis and all other sites will continue to display with Internet Explorer 8 functionality........

The Microsoft page linked to above has pictures on how to switch to Compatibility View and how to maintain a list of sites that work better in IE7.

I use IE6 and sometime mozilla, this site is broke on both. As I have stated before, there should have been a lot more compatibility testing.

Oh, gawd, this brings back memories of being in Manchester in 1995 and 2002 for the World Masters Track Championships, and staying at a b&b, and having the world-famous English Breakfast. The bangers (sausages) made of cardboard, the eggs over easy and especially the small tomato sliced in half! (I usually just had the Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes...)

Thanks for the great photo, Stapfam!
