Bicycle Mechanics - Campagnolo Veloce Shifting Problem

I have an 09 Veloce group with an 09 Centaur right shifter that is giving me fits. I also have a Record and Chorus bike that I have no problems with. This Veloce group has given me problems on two different frames with both Campy and Jagwire cable kits. Basically, I can get the rear shifting tuned in one direction only (up or down). Here is my process for setting it up.

1. Set limiter screws
2. Turn barrel adjuster on the derailleur until fully tight and then back it out two turns.
3. Set the down tube barrel adjuster to the mid-point.
4. Pull the cable tight and attach to the derailleur (with shifter in smallest cog position)
5. Start with the smallest cog and then tune up by adjusting the derailleur barrel adjuster
6. Continue to tune all the way up
7. Then try to tune coming back down.

The problem is that to get it to come down I generally have to make several turns of the adjuster in the opposite direction (clock-wise) to get it to down-shift. At this point the cable tension has changed significantly and it will no longer up-shift. I'm probably missing something simple, but I am at wits end on this one. Also, I had the same problems with the original Veloce right shifter. I bought all parts new.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

My first thought is: Cable friction. Sounds like you have too tight a bend somewhere, often the housing right before the rear derailleur.

And FYI: Campy, at least w/my earlier 10s system, recommends setting the barrel adjuster while in the 4th smallest cog. I 'm assuming that it's still the same

And the next question nis derailleur hanger alignment.

I agree, that your problem is most likely cable friction, but I'd also check the RD alignment. I had no luck with Jagwire housings and 2009 Campy shifters either. I found that Shimano housing seems to work just fine. I made the housing loop at the RD a good inch longer than the length supplied by Campy and didn't skimp on the length at the head tube either.

Your setup procedure is sound. Always get the shifts to larger cogs working first, then check the shifts to smaller cogs. If you loosen the cable tension much more than 1/2 turn after the shifts to larger cogs is good and still don;t get decent shifts to smaller ones, you've got a friction problem.

The only other possibility is someone slipping you an '08 RD. RD's made to go with the old escape shifters have been known to have weaker return springs that won't work with the new ultrashift levers. A Chorus or Record RD could be tried to see if the problem goes away. I've got an old Chorus RD mated to 2009 Centaur shifters and it work fine. I've used it with both 10 and 11 speed. Right now the shifter is converted to 11 speed.

Turned out to be friction. The standard kit was a tad too small for the 61 cm frame. I bought one of the long Jagwire coated cables and got it to work fine.
