Southwest - El Tour; crashed in the crack on frontage road?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Callin out to everyone that rode in the tour who might have been involved in or seen any crashes that occurred on the frontage road and Sweetwater intersection.
There was an expansion crack between the bicycle lane and the roadway and it had caused numerous cyclist to crash.
I witnessed one cyclist crash as her front tire was swallowed up by this expansion crack. She could do nothing about it and went over the handlebars and impacted the pavement awefully hard.
The female TPD officer that was working that intersection said to me, "that crack has taken out a bunch of cyclist." to which I replied, "and you haven't put up any cones?"
While I was assisting that cyclist and fixing her handle bars, another 4 cyclists crashed in the exact same spot.

It annoyed me that there were 2 TPD officers at that intersection, had witnessed numerous crashes as a result of the roadway hazard and they had a TPD pick-up full of large traffic cones, yet they did nothing to try and warn or prevent cyclists from crashing.

If you crashed at this location or know of someone who did or have any information please PM me.
Thanks.

Did see someone that had crashed on the frontage road but that person was being attended to already, and was not near an intersection.
You are better off telling one of us Bike Patrol folks that do the tour about problems.
This is the first time the frontage road has been used for the El Tour; the usual route, on Silverbel, had some issues.
Saw one rider on Calle Concordia that went off the road and then tried to get back on the road from the dirt shoulder; a 2-inch lip of pavement put the rider down . . . hard.
Have ridden El Tour 26 times, and yes, with a crowd now of over 8,000 there are bound to be some issues.
Many of the crashes are due to inattentiveness, riding in packs or fatigued riders.
Majority of issues are the first 20 miles (hey, all wannabe 1st!) or due to fatigue in the last 20 miles.
Pedal on!

Hey Zona,
How am I better off telling one of you Bike Patrol folks? I guess I'm missing something... this post is telling someone??? You are now aware of it.
Sweetwater is a small street that runs next to Aufmuth motors and the expansion joint is about 50 meters to the north.

The officer had seen several cyclists crash as a result of this wide expansion joint and thought nothing about just watching them happen.
No Bike Patrol folks warning people of the impending danger, no cones put up by the police of the potential danger in the roadway.
If that was my post I certainly would have done something to warn cyclists.

I'm not sure if it was on Sweetwater, but I did see an "Uneven Pavement" sign somewhere on the frontage road around 14:30.

Yes, there was an 'uneven pavement' sign on the frontage road.
Have ridden Bike Patrol numerous times. Bike patrol could/would have moved a cone over the crack.

I didn't see any crashes, but almost crashed myself along the frontage road after flatting.

While most of the road surface is grooved, the concrete is smooth for about one foot next to the curb, presumably for drainage reasons. As I pulled over to the curb with the front tire completely flat, that smooth concrete was like ice - I had almost zero control. I recovered from my first attempt and slowed way down, but still lost control again at about 5 mph. Fortunately it was slow enough that I was able to unclip and maintain some balance with my right leg as I came to a stop.

I didn't see that listed in the safety tips, but I think it should be. Not only for flats either - I think that would be extremely dangerous for everyone if the road was wet. I guess I'll e-mail Perimeter with my story...

... Bike patrol could/would have moved a cone over the crack.

They obviously missed this location. There was a bike patrol guy who stopped, didn't do anything though and was there when the next crash occurred. I took off shortly after that, not sure what he did.

If it would have come to my attention, would have moved a cone over that crack.
Ultimate responsibility is with the rider to watch where he/she is going. Just like when you drive your car, you are responsible for your actions/inactions.
While El Tour dioes its best to handle the event, overall there are few incidents/accidents for having over 8,000 cyclists on the road.
Many of these riders are ill prepared and ignore rules.
A couple of examples: One of the folks flatted and needed help was from Minnesota. Rode a brand new full custom bike (with only 35 miles on it). Asked her if she had spare tube/patch kit/pump. Answer: No. Told her it was a requirement . . . then fixed her flat.
Next person with a flat along was along frontage road. He was 84 years old riding an older 1970s bike. Had all the required stuff to fix a flat, but had never actually fixed one. He was from Tucson and explained that he would call his wife when he had a flat.
Showed him how ti fix it and he was on his way.
Overall El Tour has been a great event for the past 27 years.

Your missing my point about the officer's comment and lack of action.

Back to my original post, if anyone had or saw an accident at Sweetwater and the frontage road PM me.

Did not miss your point . . .
Yousupposedly saw the crashes. TPD did nothing. Quit whining and file a written complaint with TPD.

No kidding. I did not ride in the Tour this year but plan to next year. If you felt it was a large problem at the time, which you clearly do, then why did you not ask the TPD officer to put some cones over the crack. I feel that you should feel the same way because you did just as much as the TPD officer did to solve the problem. You asked the officer "and you haven't put up any cones?" but there is no mention of you asking to have her or anyone else for that matter to put some out or try and solve the problem. So stop complaining.

There will always be somebody to blame. It's not my fault. It's not fair. There picking on me. There will always be something that could have been done to make life safer by our government. It would have been nice if everything is always done that could be done in all cases. Sorry life ain't fair. Get over it.

Nothin' but 'Trouble' should have his attorney ride with him . . . just in case.
