9-speed XT rear cassette/rear derailleur. I recently got ambitious and replaced my rear derailleur cable myself and cannot get it to shift correctly. I can get to the top and bottom gears but always skip one in the middle. If tighten the cable I miss one of the smaller cogs and loosen it one of the larger cogs. Even though I can go from first to ninth gear, it only goes with eight clicks.

These is a slight chance that the shifters do not match the new cassette. But before you buy new shifters have a pro take a look at it to make sure. Also check the specs for the cassets and the shifters, see if they match

My take, from the original post is it worked before the cable was monkeyed with.

Bent derailleur hanger I'm thinking.

Bent derailleur hanger I'm thinking. Not unless he bent it installing the cable or immediately after.. Assuming it worked ok before mucking with the cable.

Turns out the derailleur itself was bent. Not sure how I did that, I do have a replaceable hanger and that wasn't bent! Thank you for all the suggestions.
