Whats the word on the Schwinn hinge? I plan on doing a hitchbiking trip, about 50% hitching, and 50% biking. A folder would be ideal, but the thousand dollar price tag is ludicrous to me. Anyone have experience with the schwinn hinge?

It seems like a solid bike. There is at least one forum member that rides one to work everyday, and seems very happy with it.

One more thing, if you can expand your budget to at least $300, you'll be able to access other models that might fill your needs a bit better for the intended use; i.e. Downtube Nova, or the Citizen Bike Gotham. If you just want a simple one speed bike then the Hinge, or perhaps the Dahon Boardwalk 1 might be just the ticket.
