Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - is the Krypto NY Fahgettaboudit long enough....

to lock rear wheel+ rear seat stays + parking meter or other bike rack?
i'm looking to do the Sheldon method....

the Krypto NY Standard is 4" x 8''

I would go for the longer one because who knows when you need the extra space for those wider posts, etc; the little extra weight is wayy better then walking home because your bike stuff got stolen due to not being able to fit it all.

Darn it: he only locks up the rear.... I got it mixed up with that other method where you remove the front and then lock it with the rear.... :rolleyes:

But anyway a longer lock makes it easier to find a place to lock up as it can take both wider posts and the smaller ones.

they're not the $80 Pitlocks...theyre $18 cutter skewers.

my fah u-lock fits seat tube, rear wheel, bike rack no problem. but it generally does not work with parking meters. the fit is very tight...and that's the point.

actually i had no idea that it wasn't possible. thank you - made my decision much easier.

The NY Fahgettaboudit lock is a lot thicker than the standard Mini-U. You'll have a hard time fitting it in your back pocket, unlike the Mini-U.

It's very hard to get enough space even just locking from the TT or HT through a parking meter.

I switched back to a Mini-U and haven't had any problems. If you want a chain lock, I'd look at On-Guards, they're supposed to be rated higher.

The regular NY lock is LOONNNGGGGG. And although the dimensions of the NYF and the Mini-U are similar, the NYF is MUCH MUCH thicker. I can't stress this enough.

i'd be happy to go with an Evo mini if it's "enough" for NYC. it's 30-bucks cheaper, smaller, and lighter than the others.
i'm not a messenger, and i don't plan on locking it up overnight.
i wouldn't be eligible for the warranty but i've heard their policy is ridiculous anyway.

I use the small size NYC. Whether you go with Evo Mini or Fagettaboutit, you don't really have to worry having enough room in the lock. If you are trying to get part of the frame (seat-stays or downtube) you'll have trouble sometimes but it's not needed. Seriously. I get rear and front wheel and fat-ass parking meter all with just the one small NYC lock. If you lock the wheel inside the rear triangle, the wheel is not coming off of the frame. You don't need to lock the frame also. If you can, great, but it's not needed. Also, grab a little peanut butter wrench or something and just pop the front wheel off and lock it up also. It takes only a few seconds, you don't have to carry around a cable, and it makes your bike look like you've taken precautions to prevent theft, which could in turn lead to a thief walking right past your bike without even checking it out on the way to some other bike on the rack. I don't trust cables at all. In fact I was considering getting a cable for my saddle, but I decided that I felt more secure with the BB+superglue method.

sounds good. when you say "small NYC" do you mean the 4x8 one?
i'm considering the mini because the smaller size makes it easy to pocket.

get the smaller fahgettibout it -- one of the best u-locks on the market.

yes, you cannot put it in your back pocket easily, who cares? it fits just fine under your belt.

and, like I said before, I regularly use the fah u-lock through rear wheel, seat tube, and bike rack. works great. parking meters are a bit too thick...and if thats the case, I just sheldon brown it.

my front wheel has a road hub, so I use locking skewers on the front. I also bb/superglue my seatpost and saddle.

For extra security locking, I have a armored cable and a on-guard mini u-lock. I use the on-guard through the fah u-lock to fill in the extra space.
