Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Surly Steamroller Front Fork

Hi,

I'm currently riding an '06 Surly Steamroller and want to put some good mods on it. I added a carbon fiber front fork from my other bike (a Specialized Allez) but it doesn't fit correctly. I was thinking it could be the headset not matching up. I have a richey headset on the bike now. What do I need to make this work? Are there better affordable upgrades out there? I do a lot of commuting around SF. Thanks!

what about it doesnt fit? is the steerer tube a different diameter? is it too short? Does the specialized for use a different crown race (i believe the specialized uses an integrated headset, right?) why would you want to change the surly fork?

buy new wheels, and a new crank and BB (assuming these are stock on your bike), those will be the best upgrades, a fork will make minimal difference especially since the surly fork is pretty nice

dude a crabon fork is gonna totally soak up all those road vibrations
also its faster

Did you put the carbon fork on with old bearing race?
If so, switch it out & keep all similar headset pieces together (race, cups, cap)

Thanks to everyone so far...the problem is that the handlebars and fork rattle when connected to the frame. I think it may be the bearing race...I'll test it and report back. Thanks again.

starting at the beginning... are you sure you tightened you headset before tightening your stem?

really, you'd do much better off in the mechanics forum than here. we're just a bunch of hipsters that walk our bikes everywhere (we like how fixies require less maintenance...... when you don't ride them)

assuming you are using the right headset pieces (there is a small piece that goes around the bottom of the steerer tube that you need to change), make sure you have the headset pt together correctly (there is a small shim that keeps the fork from rattling around)

also, make sure you are using the correct order of operations when installing the stem:

1) put your stem on the handlebars
2) tighten the topcap...not too tight that your handlebars dont move, but enough that your fork isnt moving back and forth
3) tighten stem bolts
