Commuting - On my 4th day commuting

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I started slow with one day three weeks ago, up to two last week and this week I'll probably only do 2 since it's a holiday.
I wasn't sure if I would be able to do it (9 miles each way in some mild hills on a mountain bike) but after the second day I was at my local bike shop getting me a set of pilot city tires to ease my commute, and it was well worth it, I probably look kind of silly!
This is the best thing I could have done.. riding to work that is, I've been in a better mood, maybe even getting a tad more work done and I haven't filled up my car in over a week. I don't think I would have attempted if it weren't for all the posts on this forum, thanks for all your help guys!

Yes, I hear you. I pretty quickly replaced my MTB tires with some smaller ones as well. Makes a nice little difference, doesn't it.

That's what we're here for.
A year and a half ago, I was you. :)

after I put them on and rode around a little I was so surprised the difference it made.. I just need to find a different set of wheels to mount them on now, I still want to use my mtb for a mtb sometimes

Yep 2 years ago for me, and this place really converted me! Now I have 2 bikes with a 3rd on the way... :D Love cycle commuting now, it makes me much happier - the London rush hour on public transport is enough to make anyone suicidal! Also when I have something to stress about (exams etc.) cycling takes my mind off it :D

It has been about a year and half for me as well. I wasn't a complete newbie, I had been car free for about 5 years 29yrs ago. It all came back quickly.
I do wish I had found this place before I had bought my bike. Oh well, Live and learn.
One of the first things I did was to get rid or the stock tires, I am now running Schwalbe Marathon Plus in the summer and Nokian Miount and Ground tires in the winter
no motor?

It's heartening to learn of your success. I hope to join you sometime soon as I begin commuting. :D
New commuters and posters are always welcome by me. I commuted before then stopped once I got a car. I now commute more by bike even though I have two cars now.

I will say you are doing it the smart way, gradually letting your body adapt. Congratulations and keep it up.

Congrats on your success!! Fun, ain't it?? I'm going on about two years now. Funny to look back at how hard it was initially. I'd get to work with jello legs and a slightly nauseous feeling from the effort. Now I leave early in the mornings to hit some hills before work.

Man that is so true.
I remember almost feeling like I was gonna' die after that first trip. I remember thinking "OMG not another hill!!". Now I get home and I feel like I can keep going. And when I'm unable to commute I miss the ride; it's so energizing.
I just ordered a Bailey Works bag so I can begin packing everything I need for work and not have to worry about where stuff will attach to my Tarmac; I like to keep the bike nice and light when I hit all those hills.

I drove to work 4 days 2 weeks ago, then had a 5 day weekend last week, so I haven't been on the bike much for almost 3 weeks. I feel really run down, no energy. Luckily that's all gone and I can ride again. I feel much better and have way more energy when I ride.
My biggest problem with my car is that the battery keeps dying - I don't drive it enough to keep the battery charged. I finally had to break down and dig out the old battery charger and put that on the car once a month or so.

May 08 here. I was bummed today that I couldn't ride. Had to haul in a kerosene heater I was giving a buddy and pick up some Fire dogs that were dropped at the office for me. Was on vacation last week and had a bunch of errands after work the week before tha I only got to ride in one day. Monson tommorow. :(
Wait till you do your first century :)
