Professional Cycling For the Fans - Tour de France gearing?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Is there any ONE place I can get info on the gear ratios the pros used at this years tour?
at a guess - id say most of them use 53 or 52 large Ring and 39 or42 small rings
and either a 11-23 or 12-25 depending on the stage
there might be a rider or 2 that use a compact on the very hilly stages- but i would not know.

I asked the same question a while ago. Read an article on Contador shifting up to his big ring to accelerate up Arcalis or Verbier.

You've described it as well as I've been able to ascertain. All of it and I DID spot compacts.

Didn't Bjarne Riis climb Hautacam entirely in his big ring the year he was juiced to his eyeballs?

I remember the commentators talking about gearing a little and specifically Lance Armstrong using a very small gear (39) because he likes to spin up these mountains. This was Ventoux.
So based off that, I'm thinking most people in the race are using a small ring of 42. Yep, they are bad ass, but it's apples and oranges to compare yourself to them. This is all they do. They are gifted at it and are trained by a pro team and have equipment most of us simply can't afford or buy. It's like getting in your VW Rabbit and comparing yourself to Mario Andretti. If you want to really look at a fair comparison, go watch your local races and compare yourself to the local CAT 1/2's. You could possibly obtain that.

There were some riders in the Giro last year who actually put on a triple for that nasty mountain TT
