You may remember a previous post about Andy, my son born with a profound disability, who broke his leg March 3, but was not diagnosed until July through a series of medical "malpractice" events.
My wife (RN, Certified Case Manager, and former case file reviewer for attorneys in malpractice suits) just finished our review of Andy's medical records around this event, and WOW, did they dig themselves a big hole. This will likely result in a formal complaint to the Medical Board regarding the hospital and certain MD's.
In any event, we came back yesterday from Andy's 8 week checkup for the major repair of his broken femur, which was broken March 3rd.
Here is my report:
His leg has totally healed, and he is cleared to begin to learn to walk again.
I would like to say a very positive word about Colorado Limb and Preservation Specialists, and especially Dr. Hugate.
WOW!! What a great MD. Kind, caring, brilliant, skilled. Throughout the entire process we feel he was the only Doc who really saw our family and care provider as a "team," and while the other docs were urging us to place Andy in a nursing home, etc., and one home health care agency would not take us, he could see that we had the spirit and will power to pull this off.
And, thanks to our caregiver (who got the "Caregiver of the Year" award from the Colorado Cross Disabilities Coalition), our family and many others, we did.
The doc was also amazed at how fast Andy healed - said it was most unusual, and must be the "genes."
Our next challenge is reteaching Andy to walk. "One step at a time."
