Okay, so here's the thing: I'm a chick living in Arkansas, and it's really hot here, right now. I'm talking 100 degrees with 100% humidity, and I'm getting ready to build up my ss mtb. So, I know it's not kool to sport the spandex, but I usually do when I ride road or CC just because, well, I sweat alot and it's comfortable for the long rides.

Anyway, I know it's kindof a faux pax to ride spandex while singlespeeding, but are you guys gonna kick my @ss if you meet me on the singletrack in spandex and spd's? I'll probably still sport the spandex, but I just need to know.

So, uh, like do you really care if anyone here cares if you wear spandex? Cause, you're gonna do what you're gonna do, and if you worry about what people here think, you need help. So, it's hot, and you're gonna build a SS... you could come up with a better intro than that..

Didn't realize I needed an intro, next time I'll try harder for you.

It was intended to be kind of a humorous post, but I forgot I'm not funny.

Nah, I don't care, but I've seen so many threads about the whole "poser spandies" that I really wondered when/if it's ever acceptable.

I don't really dig wearing lycra, but I wear what's clean. Sometimes that means I wear the lycra...

Not that I'm ultra religous, but the donkey parable comes to mind. You can't make them all happy, you can't even really make some of them happy. Screw 'em. Wear what you like. So long as it's not pink.

My sympathies to you on the loss of your grandmother. Sincere hopes and wishes that your memories of her are all good.

No one ever got their ass kicked for wearing pink... or maybe it's "for having pink on their bike." Pink lycra on the other hand...

I rock the lycra when its hot, and posted a similar thread when i had the same emotions. Wear what's comfortable.

Yeah, I tried those, but never found any that wouldn't get hung on my saddle. Eventually, I just gave up on 'em. My hubby still sports the baggies though.

I wouldn't worry about the faux pas. This year's faux pas may be next year's "cool thing".
Follow your own drum, have fun and do whatever's necessary to stay comfortable during the dog days of August!

Rock the spandex, especially if you are cute!

Seriously though, wear what you want. If someone gives you hell, ask them why they are paying so much attention to what YOU are doing, and so little attention to what THEY are doing. Then kick 'em in the jimmies. Works every time.

oh yeah, and have fun out there, even when its hotter than sin.

Uncool and Uncute is fine compared to being comfortable.

it doesn't matter what you wear. if others disagree with what you sport, then drop 'em on the climbs...on an SS, that'll be impressive.

Nah dude, I was just trying to understand the whole ss culture. Like I said, I read a lot about all the "spandex monkeys" and was just trying to see what was up with that. Forgive me for not being "in the know." BTW, I prefer a black bag, it matches everything.

I've been single speed mountain biking and fixed gearing it for 8 years. The only time I wear baggie shorts is if I'm going to be out in the general public. I think spandex cycling shorts are the only way to go if you're out for a serious training ride or just a fun ride for that matter. I think they work better. Besides, who cares what anybody thinks, do what feels good for you. Let your legs and lungs to your talking out on the trail. Good on you for trying SS's, I'll bet you'll love it.

I've recently been wearing cycling shorts under my camo pants and a long sleeve lycra shirt under an old t-shirt. I feel fine in public unless I pull up beside a messer or another fix. Knowing that they can see the lycra shirt is embarasing but ok. I'd just DIE if they knew I was wearing padded-butt squid shorts too.

nothing wrong with lycra if you can back up the need to be wearing it.

You put tape over your nipples, a sock in your crotch and a bag over your head.

Ever notice how there's regular posting folks here...

One female post something...

And people come out of the @#$@# woodwork to give advice, welcome etc..

I'm waiting for the first person to ask her to post pictures, that's what they usally do.

Some hard up @#$@#$ in here. If I were a woman (I'd be ugly, mean, and probably gay), I'd sure get a lot of responses. More than I do now.. ;)

No one even bothered to read her link, which is a blog, which talks about how her grandmother died last week.

I have these old padded shorts that came with my cannondale winter pants. The only lycra/spandex I sport is a jersey. I like the jersey/dickies combo. Functional, cool top with lots of storage, and long, baggy dickies for comfort.

I know that SSing is sort of a counter-culture clan, but wearing spandex is certainly not with the mainstream. I have been a roadie (thankfully no more) and I regularly do XC and I would never be w/o the spandex or lycra. But let me tell you: I don't feel like I am part of the crowd because I know every person driving by is laughing at the guy in skin tight shorts that look like you've dropped a load. I say screw 'em; that's the essence of cycling is "screw 'em"--being afraid to wear a certain thing goes against the spirit of free expression.

But I got that it was a joke thread, sm266:)

I do the same thing with my new Bianchi jersey from last years Tour with carharts. Problem is the jersey likes to ride up over my belt and show off the bit of a beer belly I got going. Damn comfortable, and nice and cool. The shorts under the jeans are mainly just for padding - I really shouldn't have bought that small of a saddle.

Oh and WK - I did take a quick glance at that blog - seems like a lot of posts were from her boyfriend (Aaron, I think - it was last night, memory is poor) so everyone here is out of luck anyways :)

SM266 - sorry to hear about your grandmother, hopefully riding your bike gives you some solace, and a place to think about it away from everyone else.

Ride what you want and wear what you want. Spandex, lycra, jeans, thong, whatever floats your boat. I'm sporting the padded shorts under a pair of camo or other baggie shorts and wear one of those Dri-fit type shirts to go along with it. I wouldn't sport the full on lycra as I would look like an overstuffed Johnsonville bratwurst on wheels!

But since you're a girl, lycra will do, or maybe the getup that Marla Streb sported on her magazine covershot. ;)

Okay, i know (sm266), yes she's cute and also a hell of an adventure racer. I think she's crazy for joining all you SS nuts. (I'm thinking about putting a crank on the front of my truck, that hole starter/key ignition thing is so much over kill) Anyway, I can't believe you guys laugh at how you dress. If your really worried about how others think you wouldn't ride an SS. I'm reminded of the Goths on SouthPark. "If you want to be an individual you have to dress an act like us."

I bought my first pair of padded lycra shorts this weekend on sale for $17.... since I am doing the MS Bike a Thon I figured it may be good to have some padding, and I will have to tell you, I really like them, it makes the rides much better. I bike everyday on my fixie, I commute on it and its my only form of transportation.... when I get a chance to put the shorts on, the padding just makes the ride much better.

I never wear them exposed though, I think the padding looks like a diaper and I hate it when I see bikers in spandex/lycra where you can basically see all thier junk hanging out.... so I wear them under my dickies pants. I wont knock the lycra, the padding is nice, i just dont want people seeing my religion when I get off the bike. hahahah

What's odd is I seem to be in the minority.

If I'm on a training ride, where the most I usually do is stop once at a convenience store to refill my bottles I wear lycra.

If I'm riding to the store or riding to work I wear blue jeans with boxers underneath.

Oh, and on my training rides I wear those funny looking shoes that have those plastic things on the bottom that make me walk funny. Like a duck. I guess I'm just too old to care anymore...
