View Full Version : Goals for 2010?

OK, time to start thinking of 2010's goals. Mine are:

- get back down to the weight I was summer of 2007: 240 some pounds.
- get closer to my 2007 mileage of 3000. I should finish with 1500 this year.
- ride from Pittsburgh to Chicago or Michigan or the Big Muddy - I'm not certain where I'm going to end yet. This is a three week tour this summer.

And yours?

I set a milage goal of 5k this year. Likely not going to make it. I could fake it by putting in some exercise bike and guessing non measured MTB miles, but that would just be cheating myself.

I think next year I'll just do training hours. Need to sort out what the right amount is, but I think that will let me capture what I'm after better than road miles.

Mine is about the same as last year. This year I managed to have more fun, by not worrying about how fast or how far. I climbed 3,000 ft mountains in North Carolina, Rode to eat biscuits and gravy and trespassed on golf courses and wherever else my knobs took me.

So, next year my goal is to climb more hills, get the bike much dirtier, and to stop and talk to as many cats and dogs as I can find. I plan on smiling more and worrying less about my riding than I did this year. I like my style. It fits me:thumb:

That time of year already? Wow. Ok, well I didn't really start 2009 until August 1, so it will be tough to do. My road miles for 2010 will be 5,000 as I have logged nearly 2000 since August to date. But, more importantly I am going to concentrate on weight loss and a better eating plan. I did drop from 266 to 252 to 248 then back to 252, but my eating habits were erratic at best. So, my stretch weight goal is 225. I did my first metric century 11/14/09 so I would say at least 3 metrics and train for a century with a stretch goal of completing one for 2010.

To never again see a "3" at the beginning of my weight. 299, I'll be happier'n Larry the Cable Guy at Memorial Stadium if I see you on the scale.

I'm not sure I should set this one, but I'd sure like to ride in, and finish, the 2010 gravel world championships, held here in Lincoln, USA sometime in September. Dangit.. I typed it... I've done gravel epics for the past two years so why not do a third? (Note to self: remember this post at mile 95 and use it as fodder to abuse thy self)

300 - never again.

I want to ride a couple 24 hour races; if I can just represent within my age group, I'll be happy. I also want to run a brevet series, and stay off the bump list for Paris-Brest-Paris 2011. I'm not setting a mileage goal, but the miles will come if I meet the other goals. One more, non-riding, I want to get my new rando bike built up for the big ride in Paris, too.

I've got a number of goals for 2010. I'm retiring (again - I flunked the first retirement) in June and will have plenty of time to ride.

Weight
Started at 279 lbs. in June. My doctor told me to get a gym membership and start riding a stationary bike. I told him I wasn't put together that way. It's going on 5 months, 3 bikes, 2,000 mi., and 42 lbs. now and my, goal for 2010 is 200 lbs. by April 1st.

Kilometers
7500 Km

Trips
I plan on riding the entire Katy Trail in April

Other goals
I want to ride my first Century. I've already done a number of Metric Centuries.

I'd also like to do a 200 Km. so I can convince myself I can handle a 200 Km Brevet.

Compete in the local Sprint Triathlon

to get back on track. between the weather and Thanksgiving I have done real bad and am back over 200 again. :(

For the coming year? In no particular order:

metric century early in the year -- say, April or the beginning of May. I can do 30 miles (if they're flat) without difficulty at this point.
English century by the end of the year -- September or so.
ride up the hill out of my neighborhood without stopping. Hey, I live in Manayunk, and my neighborhood hill is "The Wall". I already have a granny gear, thankyouverymuch, but I need to improve one key component of the drivetrain -- the engine, AKA me.
weeklong tour -- don't know whether this will be with a group or solo. The Pittsburgh-DC ride sounds good; there are group tours in Canada (Toronto-Quebec City) that sound fun, too.
lose at least 30 pounds -- I'll be having lap-band surgery in January, so this should be achievable and then some. Ideally, I'd like to lose about 60 pounds overall, but I can take it slowly. This is not at the top of my list; I'm trying to remind myself that weight is only one way to keep score, and I'm really trying to get more fit and active overall.
5 chin-ups -- I have never, in my life, successfully done an unassisted chin-up. The local gym has a gadget to give me a boost; I figure I can work my way towards it in stages with help from that thing.
enjoy it all and laugh often!

My first goal of 2010 is to let go of 2009 and not let it beat me up.

Second, tied closely to one, is to stay healthy. I lost around 6 months to injury in 09 and still have lost days to not being fully recovered. I have to accept my limitations and work toward maximizing whatever my real potential is, not my perceived or desired potential.

Last year I had mileage, weight, event, racing, and tour goals. This year I'm just going to concentrate on developing more of a regular schedule and letting itself ingrain it's way into a routine.

I want to take a riding vacation this year. Even if it ends up being a few weekend trips. Arkansas and Oklahoma seem reasonable targets and gives me some climbing to look forward too:twitchy:

Lastly, as much as it pains me, I have to reduce the stable. I simply can't justify having the number of bikes I have and I end up spending way too much time searching for parts and tinkering than riding. I could possibly fail miserably at this one:roflmao2:

Open ended, I will race again, even if it means 2011 and going off the back and sagging out when the volunteers want to go hme after the race.:p

This is a fantastic goal to have, imo, that's the only thing that kept me under 400lbs this year - commuting. I didn't get long commutes in, but the ten miles a day kept my legs moving at least. When I skipped out on commuting for a couple days it felt "weird" to drive, at the most I took a week off at a time before I went "huh, driving stinks, what the heck am I doing??" and started commuting again.

Great goal, and more power to you for keepin' it real.

Mine are:

- to keep riding for coffee every day: this is my main form of exercise and is a 20km ride each way. Prior to April I would take the bus or drive.
- to complete the 'donut ride' without being gratuitously dropped
- to not go "holy %^&*" when I see photos of myself
- am adding a road bike to complement my city cruiser I now ride
- to do one 'bike tour' of some sort: maybe a 5 day trip on the east coast (I detest warm weather)
- to have my doctor comment positively on my weight at my October check up.

Since it's my first real year of riding, I've got no mileage goals having nothing to compare to...

But, as far as weight goes, I'd like to break 200.

I have a chunk of rides to do, including the TD Bank 5 Boro tour to start off the season (42 miles) which will be my first organized ride. Amongst other big ones, I want to do the 60 mile RideMS Tappan Zee Bridge ride (getting to cross a bridge that I've covered so many times in a car, on a bike, sure will be something), and there's a thought of a Century late next year. I don't know how realistic that is, but we'll see. I'm feeling awfully strong lately, and looking forward to getting my roadie after tax season.

I'll also be graduating college this year (after eight years... yeah, I effed around a lot the first time around..) and with that I'll hopefully be finding a job that fits this lifestyle a little better.

Also, planning my first sprint tri for the end of the summer... Really looking forward to that.

I've already met my goals for this year. One was to stay within 2 pounds of 146. I'm at 146.2 this morning. The other was to ride 6000 miles (500 / mo avg.). I'm at 6252 thus far (568 / mo avg), with 222,000 feet climbed, 15.5 mph avg.

For 2010, I'm hoping to do the Death Ride. http://www.deathride.com/

For 2010:

Keep riding, increase frequency -- this year, I let too many good days slide by.
No broken bones -- pretty safe on this one, as I have some separation between incidents -- 2001, 2005, 2008.
Pedal to my brother's farm again -- did it several years ago w/ my nephew, will see if my ambitious daughter is up to it next year.

I'll settle for getting my asthma under control so I can take stairs without getting winded. Then I'll think about bike goals. An anaphylactic reaction a few weeks ago has thrown me for a loop, breathing-wise.

Hmm 2010 goals ...

1. Work my way into the low 90kg area. Currently 106.5kg and close to meeting my part the way through 2009 goal of 100kg for xmas. I might not make this years goal but i'll be oh so close and it will be awesome either way.

2. Ride at least one more metric century.

3. Ride at least one MTB race of 50km or more.

I just started riding again in mid-October. That would be the first time for me in roughly 9-10 years. I set a goal to achieve 500 miles by the end of the year. That's an average of about 45 miles per week for 11 weeks. I'm at about 335 miles so far (about 7 weeks in). So despite not riding much over the Thanksgiving holidays, I'm still on pace to achieve this goal.

For 2010:

1) Ride my first (of hopefully many) centuries.

2) Achieve a total mileage of 2,000 over the course of the year.

3) Never see my weight start with a '4' ever again.

4) Ride the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Towpath from Pittsburgh, PA to Washington, DC (about 335 miles)

My 2010 goals are simple.

1. Get the CAT off the keyboard.
2. Learn to appreciate being "love mauled" and not worry about how I look in bandaids.
3. Lose the last 25 lbs.
4. Do a couple overnite randoneer trips.

I would love to get under 200lbs. My main goals are to do centuries back to back, match the 7000km from this year, get even stronger on the bike, help promote my local club and support our unitedway century ride, do a Livestrong event and ride to it from Canada, likely the one in Pittsburg. In reality thou my goal is always the same have fun on my bikes but at the same time make sure to spend quality time with my true passion...Family!

So the goals I set for 09 where to complete STP two day in under 15 hours, did it in 17.5.
So I will have to redo that one.
To complete my first century, which I did.

So for 2010 I will set a goal of riding my bike as much as AI am able to do:) having fun the whole time.

I tried to resist replying to this thread because 2009 was not a fun year and I didn't get to ride as much as I had the year before. But then I thought what the hell, I will throw them against the wall and see if they stick. Here goes:

Enter and Finish the Stoopid 50 - it's a 50 mile back country MTB race through the mountains of Rothrock State Forest near State College. I have ridden all the trails on the course just not all 50 miles at the same time.

Ride from my house in State College, PA to my brother's house in Cedars, PA (200 miles) (or maybe Center City Philadelphia) to raise awareness and money for a cause near and dear to me and my family.

Enter and complete a Sprint Triathlon, most noteably the Big Bear Tri at Beltsville Lake in the Pocono Mountains of NE Pennsylvania.

Drop 25 - 50 pounds to get down around 200 so I can play volleyball better in the league I am in with out my knees hurting like a MFer the day after.

I simplified my goals from last year to account for time required to support and enjoy my family. If I could squeeze it in, I would ride everyday buy I would miss watching and helping my kids grow up.

Goals for 2010?

Get under 300LBS (and stay that way)
Get to the point that I can ride (comfortably) 60-75 miles in a day, AND, be able to do it again the next day!
Continue to give my lovely wife at least two compliments each and every day.
To still be here in 2011

I was going to have the goal of doing both sides of Highwood Pass (about 120 k of climbing), but now it looks like I may be moving to the very flat city of Saskatoon, where hill training consists of riding in and out of the river valley. So now my goal is to use a bike more for transportation. Ride to work every day, pick up groceries, etc. To this end, I may replace the Metropolis with a step-through frame bike such as the Breezer Uptown 8 u-frame. There are a few active cycling clubs in that city, I might join a club for the first time in years as well.

-Get to 200-225 (at 270 now)
-Ride at least 2 hours 5 days a week, at a avg mph of 15+ (riding about 45min-1hr and only about 11 mph now)
-Learn how to do all the adjustments/maintenance for my bicycle. (About screwed up the front derailleur yesterday, but finally fixed it and it shifts! Although its still not as good as it was when I first got it)
-Eat healthier. Become a vegetarian. 0 coke! (Cant drop the pizza and the coke. If something bad is in my house I cant say no to it yet either..)
-Do at least 50 miles in one day. (My highest right now is 12)
-Have a fastest lap under 15 minutes where I ride. (25:41 now)

Also do all this while maintaining 3.5+GPA in college. (Have 4.0 right now! In case you're curious, I'm learning network administration.)

I think I will be able to achieve almost all of that. I'm getting better and better about breaking the old habits, I'm still doing some of them, but less and less. Although I'll never be able to just stop the pizza, hopefully I'll just have it maybe only once a month. ;)

My 2010 goals:

-Weight down to 250 (stretch goal 225). I'm at 310 right now and have been holding right around there despite 6+ months of bike commuting. Guess I need to focus more on diet...
-Continue 5 day a week bike commuting year-round
-4000 miles in the saddle
-Ride at least 2-3 metric centuries (stretch goal English century)
-Try an overnight (at least) bike tour (maybe an overnight there and back along the C&O Canal Towpath?)
-Participate in some organized community/group rides

Wow! Many awesome goals...many impressive ones met! :thumb:

As usual, I am inspired by you all.

For 2010...and the remaining days of 2009 for that matter, I will:
Continue to learn the meaning of the word gradual
Remain present in my body so I may continually ask myself 'Is what I'm doing nurturing?'
And, when I am with loved ones, remain present with them.... really be with them with my full attention.

Oh...and I will strive to create a thread where I can use the "lurking" smilie.

Happy full moon...happy riding... be safe and have fun!
