Folding Bikes - bike friday e-tikit

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I like the fact that they have a motor that will work with the narrow front fork spacing folders use (unlike the Brompton Nano, which requires a new 100 mm OLD fork).
The big stumbling block for me is still the weight. 9 lbs for a front wheel? Especially on a folder that will be carried around frequently? No thanks.

hi vincent, to speak generally 5.6 amp hour... for people without knowledge of such transport. that equates to certainly less than 10mile range propably even five. and with that battery the rate of current discharge (available power) is lower than what most people would expect going up hills. from my experience TRY electric bikes before you buy. I have im still waiting for decent batteries... may be waiting a while .. :)
however in the mean time Im developing this proect http://www.motoredbikes.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=19246&d=1246278550
SHE is still not finished so please dont judge the unbake cake

I suppose the magic term is "assist". As in "enable you to go up a hill" or whatnot.

You are a much more daring man than I.

"I suppose the magic term is "assist". As in "enable you to go up a hill" or whatnot."
exactly :thumb: people should not expect a moped, however hill climbing ability/flat grade speed would depend on gearing
there are many other considerations that are not mentioned here for time constraints :twitchy:

Thanks. famous last words

what appeal to me with this bike is...it doesn't look "cumbersome" and disguised as like a regular bike. here in nyc, electric bike is illegal and pigs will harass u if u are on an electric bike and not a delivery boy. thus if u were to get this e-tikit and ride around nyc, u would probably get less harassment cuz it looks like a regular bike.

I am not sure how useful this bike will be when going up hill. It is a single gear and seem to be optimized for higher speeds (it was slow to pick up speed even on a flat road).

"I am not sure how useful this bike will be when going up hill. I will provide some feedback on this project, having provided power in motion with some information and feedback during the project. I've had a chance to ride the bike, and have a pretty good impression on the end result.
The weight of the motor on the tikit is pretty manageable, particularly since when folded, the 9lb hub motor remains on the ground and is simply rolled around. Only when lifting does the bike seem notably heavier, which is not common thanks to the tikits excellent rolling design :)
The only additional weight truly being carried while folded is the battery and controller, which adds up to perhaps 4.5lbs.
As for the battery, you can lol at 207wh if you want to, but the battery was chosen for light weight. Being a Crystalyte system, a bigger battery is easily chosen instead, giving more range. The 5.6ah lithium polymer battery will also handle the current needs of the 20a controller, it is close, but this battery does have the capability to provide proper output for hill climbing.
As for hill climbing, yes, one should simply expect an assistance as opposed to being dragged up. Most legal e-bikes are designed to provide a boost only, rather than provide complete propulsion on their own. The projects being made by many at endless sphere for instance, are well above typical design intentions.
