hey, I'm want to install a new fork on my bike but i'm not sure how the whole head set and star nut thing works. What tools would I need for the job. I have a threadless. Thanks

If you are not sure about installing the star fangled nut then have an LBS do it. The tool is like $50 bucks which you probably won't use until you get another fork in a few years. Alternatively, if you are mechnically inclined, you can try threading the star nut onto a 10mm socket using the headset compression bolt. Then slowly tap the nut into the steerer. Ensure you've filed a chamfer on the end of the steerer tube, as this will make it a bit easier. I've used this method before. I takes a lot of patience and practice to ensure that you get the nut in straight and square. Otherwise, you will punch it in crooked and it will useless.

A double star nut can't hardly go in crooked.

Wanna bet? :D
Wanna bet? :D Since you have probably managed it, I defer to your expertise.
i put a dbl star nut in crooked. then i panicked and had to go buy another threaded rod of the same size, screw it in, and tap it on the side with a hammer until it was more straight. it's still crooked a little, but it works.
anyhow, boo yaaaaah. this just goes to show that a fool will always be able to disprove anything you once thought to be impossible.
