I am considering moving back to SPD's. The 'beater cleats seem to wear out incredibly fast, and I'v had my foot coming out in most inappropriate moments whilst skipping.

The lack of tension adjustment is annoying.

Anyone elsehad similar experiences?

I don't have a pari, but I've heard stories. I e-mailed crank brothers and they said it was a problem with older models and had been fixed for the last year or so. But thats just what they said.

That's why I like clips and straps

been riding eggbeaters on the same cleats since i got the fix back in Feb, and I do a ton of walking in my bike shoes too (wearing them around school and work when i ride in) -- and I had this same problem THIS MORNING before i read your thread.

I had just come out of a building, climbed on, clipped in, and started away, when i leaned forward and resisted to slow down so i could pull up my shorts (no use giving all the traffic a view of my plumber's crack) right foot came out all on its own and slammed my leg into the tire, which stung like a ***ch and left a nice sized lump on my shin. I lubed my chain last night, so maybe its the overspray from that on the pedal, but it isn't the first time i've slid out. Maybe i'll move up to the candy pedals, but i like the simplicity of the eggbeaters. Just wish my shin wasn't throbbing.

CrankBros says to send them back with $25 and you'll get their re-built, 'upgraded' stainless pedals back to ya...

I've ridden a few thousand miles on the same set of egg beaters and original cleats with no problem. But I'm not riding fixed. It's my guess that the generous amount of float that is inherent to the design (which I happen to appreciate) is not well suited to the additional forces which riding fixed subjects the pedals to. I think the problem is that the cleats are not made of hard steel but are made out of copper(?) which wears out quckly. If you are heavy user (messenger etc.) who clips in and out several times a day (as opposed to weekend riders/commuters who do it few of times a day), then you will wear out your cleats. Inspect the cleats and if they are rounded off then replace them. Or else, just get the $50 shimano pedals with sealed cartridge bearings and steel cleats. In my experience the new shimanos (2004) are much superior to anything in the price range (including egg beaters).

Commuters clip in/out quite often, and if they aren't riding fixed, they can't trackstand (normally).
I'd rather have the cleats wear out than the pedals.

I've only pulled out once with my mallets, which have the same mechanism. It's only been a few months, but the cleats are already pretty worn... Maybe I should put a new set on order...

I've been riding quite a bit with a pair of eggbeaters that are just a couple months old. No problems to speak of.

no problems here either...been riding perhaps 250 miles a week for the last six months between a pair of eggbeaters and a pair of candies. same shoes/cleats.

the cleats do seem to wear about the same as my old ATACs. haven't had to replace them yet, but probably will soon. i have a spare set from the second pair of pedals anyway.

Yeah, I just bought a new pair of Sidi's plus Shimano 540's. Incredible difference. I like the 'beater design and weight, but hope that they will perfect it in the future
