So I basically just ride with 2 other people, and due to crazy and inconsistent schedules, it's often often only one at a time, and their riding styles are way different. The one guy, built about 20 pounds lighter than me, and about my skill level, likes to grind through the trails until we're both exhausted and have to catch our breath, drink water, and rest. This is okay because it really hits your conditioning and makes it feel like a better workout. The downside is when we approach difficult sections we are often too tired to really hit it hard and enjoy it to its full potential (downhills) or make it to the top (uphills).
The other guy is about 80 pounds heavier than me, former offensive lineman, and since he's not nearly as nimble and quick as I am, I often have to stop and wait up for him. This allows me to take short, frequent breaks and I'm pretty much in great shape to hit all sections and go as fast as I want and really kick ass.
I just really realized this after riding the same new trail with both styles last week. I must say I far prefer the latter. It also allows me to ride further and longer since I'm not burning myself out quickly.
So what's your style? Why??

My typical ride starts with a long climb, often on a forest road, followed by a long singletrack descent. For these I tend to pound through the climb, take a long rest at the top with lunch, then start down fairly well refreshed. If the trail is more level, I'll either pound it or go easy depending on my mood and how technical it is.
Some trails just demand to be ridden flat out (with a slight bow to conditions). My favorites for this type of riding are those on the eastern flank of the Cascade Mountains, particularly west of Bend, OR. The trail surfaces are well drained pumice that's usually smooth and firm enough to take at kick-ass speed for miles on end. I ride these until I drop!

i usually go full out the whole time, but im young(15) and in shape(play football, lacrosse, and bike frequently) so i usually dont do to bad. but i do have my "break" spots on my ride were i get off the bike get some water and a snack in me, and stretch and walk around a little bit. i usually take about 2 or 3 breaks for my normal ride which is about a 15-20 mile ride in about 1.5-2.5 hours.
i do like to chill or take it easy on some spots then hit it really hard and aggressive on other places. i love just gunning it downhill and going really really fast

I prefer to ride longer distances with minimal breaks. Usually when I'm with friends we take frequent breaks at the top of climbs or at trail junctions in order to hang out, talk, and make sure everyone is still with the group. When I'm riding solo, I just ride until I get to the end of the trail. It's tough to choose which I prefer more. On one hand, I like riding further between breaks, but on the other, I enjoy riding with my friends, talking and hanging out while we're out riding.
