I lost one of my knives!! :( Must have dropped it somewhere in my search for a tree. It was clipped to my pants on the waist with the knife inside against my skin and I would have felt it if it slipped out, but I guess I didn't! I've been to like 6 places so I have no idea where it is.
And I just spent an hour last night sharpening it, too.

Switch to a round sharpening stick. All you need to do is find the right grit size and type for the blade material. That can take a little experimenting. A very fine grit diamond stick is the best for most stainless. The small contact area of the point of contact between the diameter of the stick and the blade means almnost no presure is required. Small contact area abrades more with less work.

See if there is a metal detecting group in your area. Some guys like to find thing just for the fun/challenge. Of course a wee reward would make the hunt all the more fun.

Oh hell that was a Siu Moment.
Someone coming home found the knife next to Shorty but in the grass. I went to search Shorty five times. Never thought to look in the grass. :o
@ Bailey's dad: I usually don't spend that much time messing with it but I was trying for the mirror polish. I'm new at sharpening and the guys over at my other forum are trying to teach me some key pointers. Thinking about getting a sharpmaker to mess with. And a leather to strope with. But perhaps after the Holidays. The knives are not a priority.

This was my cheapie knife. A $45 Gerber. If it was any of my Benchmades I would have found it because I would have looked harder. And I wouldn't be sharpening them. They'd be sent out to be done professionally.

What model is that? It's not really something I would use but I'm kinda curious and want to look it up. Unless you have a link.
Edit: Found it. I'd rather spend $2500 on another bike. It would be cool in S30V M4.

He's a friend. He recommends sharpening sticks/rods. It blows me away what people spend on blades. My wife opened the AMEX bill and saw what I spent on the bike last month. Dog house tonight.

yup. One person trash, another's treasure...I don't understand that way of thinking. I don't fish, shoot pool or play golf, but I would totally understand why someone might obsess over and spend their money on the gear for those activities, just like I do on mine.
Re: sharpening, I have the spyderco sharpmaker system and I think it works okay, but in all honesty, the best thing I have ever used is this (http://www.knivesplus.com/smithsknifesharpener-sm-ccks.html) little thing (you can also get it at hardware stores for less than $10). I have it in my desk at work, i use it to touch up the carbon steel (non-stainless) Opinel knife I use for lunch. A few minutes every month or two and it is ready to go.

I do want to try a diamond stone one day on my D2 knife. I haven't really used that knife much so it still has its original 'scary sharp' edge.

HUH? when I was making custom kinves I had a much better belt sander than the one show in the forum photo, along with plenty of maching shop equipment. But no knife collector needs to buy power equipment to do it at home. However they can't really duplicate the sharp edge with a mirror finish like one can with the belt sander. But there is no need to.
A fine grit diamond sharpening stick is the least amount of work if one knows exactly how to do it. Much better than a stone.
It's not hard to learn. There is a lot of sharpening confusion out there. It's mainly about the right grit and the right pressure for the exact metall alloy that the blade is made of. The amount of pressure on the blade changes the results a lot, too much will give a rough finish.

A great finish for a sharpened edge is to use the brown backing of a Yellow legal pad. It is soft like leather and has a light abrasive surface. After 15 minutes with the Diamond Stick, 10 minutes with the brown side of a Yellow Legal pad and you can cut like Dexter.

the "axe" part might not be accurate, in some cases, (ie with **** Erectus) they may have thrown the "axe" by hand at an animal, like throwing a knife...plus some of the knives were used to cut meat/into bones etc. So there. :P

Incorrect. The Neanderthal skull I saw today had somewhere in the neighbourhood of a 1700cc cranial capacity. Us humans have a what, maximum of 1200cc cranial capacity? Dude was smart, he just couldn't keep up with our prolific breeding. We outbred them.

Don't you roll your eyes at me. All of the Benchmades are lifetime free sharpening. I just pay shipping. They will sharpen it, lube it, check it's operation and replace any parts for free. If I want a new blade, it's 25 or 35 depending if I want BK coating. 10 day turn around.

I work for a violin maker, so we're all about sharp knives, chisels, scrapers, etc. Our method is simple, without any hocus pocus. Japanese wet stone (water stone), work on each side of the stone to raise a burr, strap it, then get your butt back to work. :)

I found that the guys there are really sincere. When searching posts I found that they all pretty much do this kind of thing for each other all the time.
I was really shocked. I didn't want to take it at first but he said to me that he never had such a hard time giving away a knife. Then he said if I didn't take it, he will pass it on to someone else.
