So my company is having a Holiday dinner and it's one of those all dress up fancy schmancy affairs. So fancy I probably have to wear a dress with high heels and make up. I usually don't go to it because most of the people end up drunk and become silly and I really don't want to see that. I don't drink myself so I'm always the sober one.

Anyway, my date for the evening wants me to dress up.....as an elf. My response was :wtf: My date even offered to supply the outfit (costume?) and we BOTH would be elves.

Other co workers protested, saying that they wanted to see me in a dress. For those of you who don't know, I work in a warehouse and me being all prissy and foo foo is not what they are used to and totally is going to cramp my style.

So now the elf thing doesn't sound so bad. Because trust me...I don't want to hear cracks about me in a dress and make up the days following this party.

I would say it depends on what the elf costume looks like. One of those little red skirts with the fluffy white trim? :P

Yeah, is this sexy elf... otherwise, the tasteful little black dress is always good.

And, Siu, no matter what you do, you're going to get razzed about it. So do what you want to do, and screw 'em.

You can always wear the green ears with a Star Trek dress uniform. Instead of telling everyone "Merry Christmas" you can say "Live long and prosper". :D

Just wow 'em... and then act as if that's normal for you outside of work.

Though... the green ears do sound cute! :D

dress up, just keep it tasteful. Make sure you get a lot of pictures of the guys with the rent-a-dates (we actually had a guy who used to bring these way over his level ladies to the xmas party year after year. Finally got caught surfing an escort sight one year before the party...)

my two cents:

if you REALLY don't want to go, don't.

if you do go, why choose between an elf and clothing you clearly are not comfortable in? Either route will probably make you even less comfortable about going...who needs that stress?

I would say, take a day off, go shopping with a friend who's taste and opinions you trust and find something you really like and feel beautiful and comfortable in. (Yes, I know that's not easy to do in women's clothing stores). Then, I agree with what everyone else said. Go, and just rise above the teasing and shenanigans. That stuff will always be around, nothing anyone can do about it. But no need to feed into it.

and yes, share pics if you can:innocent: (You want our opinions, right?;))

Dan said that if it wasn't for work he'd be here in a heartbeat to take me. It's Laura Jean, my nutty best friend. She said she's making the outfits and she paid for the tickets. Imagine Ellen Degeneres running around in circles dancing and happy she got the tickets. That's Laura Jean.

well Timber it's like this, Siu is so damned good looking if she dresses up and goes to this party thing she will look so flaming hot that she just may put her co-workers into a deep coma, and if that happens she'd have to do EVERYONES job when she gets back the following work day!

BTW, I say go for it, I hate dressing up too but when I do look out! LOL! ;0)

Never do something you feel uncomfortable doing or feel is inappropiate especially in a work situation.

Hate to say it I avoid these situations entirely... I just don't go. I definitely would not if someone expected me to and be the "entertainment". The only way I would is if my job depended on it. I would ask everyone else what they are wearing and dress accordingly. No need to buy a fancy smaltzy dress - get a nice jacket and dark, trouser style jeans and some "bling" (nice earrings, cool shoes)... stuff you can wear on a regular date.

Siu, you're a very pretty girl who happens to work in a warehouse. That doesn't mean you belong only in work clothes. Are the guys in the warehouse going to put on ties and jackets, or show up dressed as elves because they don't wanna wear a tie? Wear the dress, look great, act as if it's nothing, and enjoy weeks of compliments.

As for the elf costume, well, they're not for grown-ups. Your date is gonna look like a maladjusted poindexter in that thing.

Why not wear a dress but not a short dress? You'll still be attractive but wont be embarrassed if pictures do show up on the internet. And if you bring a camera and tell your coworkers you're going to be the one taking pictures they should behave better until they drink too much and do stuff they'll regret later.

Some of my friends and I are Santa and his helpers at a city event every year. I luck out because I get to be the dork in the Santa hat roasting chestnuts and just have to worry about dressing warmly. One of my friends is stunningly beautiful, (even dressed as an elf) and she usually looks really good regardless of how she's dressed. I'd imagine you should be able to do the same even if you do get talked into wearing the elf costume.

I think you're just being shy about being outside the norm from what these guys typically see you as. You might be surprised by them, too- as in; sure, they do a share of razzing on the job, but maybe off the job- when they're cleaned up too, it will be a different situation all together?

Plus, the tix are paid for. so, you can at least make an appearance. you never know- it might be FUN!

Wear something that you feel comfortable in. If you feel comfortable, you'll feel confident- and that will go a long way in having fun!
If its not a dress, then black pants & a nice shirt area always appropriate.

Okay fine. I will do either a long dress or a nice pant outfit. No ears or green hats with bells. I'm just going to have to tell her I won't go if she makes it mandatory I wear the elf thing.

Ah no you are not... you go because you want to not because you are forced to.

My point is... everything we do is because we decide to do it. There is no gun held to your head. If it was inappropiate for your partner to buy the tickets you should tell her - give her the option to return them or bring someone else. You should only go because you want if nothing else but to support your partner.

The only thing we are ever obligated to do is be kind and respectful to adults, obey the 10 commandments and try and be good humans.

Live the adventure. If Laura Jean/Ellen is a friend, celebrate your friends dream. You might have a kooky SBW moment in the future and need to call in a favor. If the Elf Suit is done right, you can be foofoo, sexy, high heeled with green ears. Pictures would be appreciated.

Siu,

Find a foodbank, auction or raffle the ticket and donate the proceeds to the foodbank, and let the elf go to the party with the winner. Elf gets to write-off the ticket as a charitable expense, you help some people out, and you don't have to go to the party.

If you don't want to go, but feel obligated to, then go early when fewer people are there. Stay until the crowd approaches the normal size for your office parties, make the rounds and say hello then leave. This way you will get some credit for face time but won't have to stay to deal with people getting drunk and acting silly.

Don't listen to the advice of some guy who knows more about women clothes than most women do. :)

Decide what you feel comfortable in and have fun with, elf suit or not, and just go and have a good time. With your personality and looks, I doubt anyone will even notice what you have on.
