Triathlon - Sunscreen and the Ironman

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How does sunscreen work with the ironman; how do they go about reapplying say during their bike ride, etc... how is it usually done, if at all.
If you think you need more, stop and put some on.

So it would be available at drink stops, etc. Is that what the 9hr (super fast) guys do?

I really don't think they worry about it. Try wearing zinc oxide or something that has no lanolin and a high spf that will last all day.

I know at IM Arizona they had bins of it, and volunteers would slap some on everyone's shoulders as they exited the changing area before getting their bikes in T1, If i were doing an ironman i would probably get around spf 80 and put that on before the swim, and then put some on during the beginning of the run. possibly throw one in bike special needs, especially if i was doing a 13 or 14+ hour IM

That. The volunteers were great.
Also, for any tri half iron or longer, I keep a can of the aerosol spray on sunscreen in my transition area, and spray some on at T1, and then more on at T2. Quick, easy, and prevents sunburn pain the next day.
I also put on some of the super waterproof stuff before putting my wetsuit on.
The combination of everything seems to work.
I had the volunteers apply it when they offered exiting transition both times I think. I got a touch red, but not burned.

That's my experience too. It was everywhere and people offered to apply it.

I'd be uncomfortable with some dude lathering me up, or even worse having a good looking lady doing it, and in tri-shorts too, OMG!
I know I'm nieve but I actually enjoy the burn, but I've stayed off shore fishing 12 hours every weekend over the summer and also work outside all day.
I'll probablly be sorry I did when I'm 50 but I love the golden skin, i dont really ever burn!

I'm a boater and spend every weekend on the water. I even spend a week's vacation that way without sunscreen. But being on the bike for six hours is different. Sunscreen helps keep you cool.

You guys ever heard of a little thing called skin cancer? One of the biggest killers of people in America today. Keep that in mind.

yeah I went to the dermatologist and she mentioned it, but when I told her I dont burn I just get darker her head almost exploded and then the onslaught of medical terms she spit at me, I didn't hear anything after "do you know how you'll look in 5 years?" I guess my ADOS got the best of me.

My only iron race was in November, so the Sun was not a huge factor - It got dark earlier, and for the most part I was mostly covered up on the bike. That said, I seem to recall that I re-applied in transition. I once heard, but cannot confirm, that if you put on some sunscreen before you go to bed the night before, and then re-apply in the AM, that it will last a bit longer. I have no idea whether or not that is fact or fiction however.
