Northeast - NYC Vintage subway train is on for Dec - every Sunday!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just got the word - it will run, Queens Plaza to 2nd Ave, Sundays 10 AM-5PM Dec 6-27.
Which line?
Sorry - It's always been the V train, I am guessing it's still that one. It runs back and forth until 5 PM. It's always fun to watch people catching the V who don't realize wth is going on that day:lol: They do a few double takes after they climb on board while reading/texting etc.
The MTA usually decide this earlier in the year and promote it heavily, with the first ride being the Sunday after Thanksgiving, but i just got this news from a friend who works for them.
For those who don't know, it is a train made up of several retired and prototype IND/BMT cars from the 1930s- 1950s. They are normally on display at the NYC Transit Museum in Brooklyn, and the chances to ride them are rare, so take advantage and bring a camera - it's a fun day.:)
I have pics up here (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=36864&id=1051973886&l=2fbd55965a) if you'd like to see last year's ride.

I had to look at map to figure out where the V goes and suprise surprise, it goes to Flushing where they keep the good Chinese food at. hmmm...liang pi noodles on a Sunday sounds like a good idea.

What's this V train? :p I guess its been quite a while since I rode the subway on a regular basis. Cool photos. I'll have to check this out.
I wanted to do this last year but never go around to it. Must get my act together this year.

in past years it was from 2nd-ave LES to Queens Plaza, not the V's regular terminal @ 71st-Continental. You can, however, hop on the E or R & take it to 74th for the 7. now thinking of it, i must go to flushing for hot pot after riding outside. my toes were freezing after a 1.5 hour ride this morning, and that's with neoprene booties...
as for your question Stacy,
the V runs from 2nd-ave LES to 71-continental in Queens. It runs on the 6th Ave IND line from Broadway-Lafeyette to 50th, crosses the East river (sharing tracks with the E), then continues on the IND Queens Blvd line. it's apparently a new line, having been put in place in 2002.
Jyo - I am almost positive regular Vs are running that day as well, and of course you can always catch something else at Queens Plaza and/or grab the 7 at Roosevelt Ave./74th st. for Main St.
Pls give me a yell if you want some company - I found an awesome place through some riding friends, with scrumptiously greasy noodles.:thumb: It's on Main street, right across the street from the Flushing QPL branch.

One of the fun parts about living in New York City is that every time you think you know the subway, they move the trains around, add a line here, take one away there.

To top it off, the subway changes its routes every weekend...

Change of plans! I'll be getting off around 65th St. for filipino food. There may also be a detour to el pollo campero.

there's a place on Roosevelt near 69th that makes awesome Cuban sandwiches.

They did this on the A line a few years ago and to make this cycling related, I was taking my bike to the shop for repair when I saw the old car pull in. It's great that they do this because it's nice to ride these old cars.
indeed...i normally hate the train, but these are a treat.
Missed the train today so I googled and came up with this schedule, though I'm not sure it's for this year.
From http://www.mta.info/nyct/service/events/nostalgia.htm
From Lower East Side 2 Av station on the V line at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m.
and 4 p.m.
From Queens Plaza station at 10:45 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1:45 p.m., 3:15 p.m. and 4:45pm.

There's an actual schedule? I was at 53rd waiting and saw that the V doesn't run on the weekends. Waited and only saw two E trains so I headed home.

Yeah I waited at the Broadway/Lafayette Station and watched four F trains pass. Then I checked my iPhone, with itrans, which also said the V wasn't scheduled to run on Sundays. There were a number of notices posted but nothing about vintage trains. Then I began to realize there's probably only one vintage train and it probably does take a while to get from the Lower East Side up to Queens Plaza and back again.
Maybe next Sunday I'll run down to Broadway/Lafayette around 1pm, or 2:30pm to see if my luck is any better. Or if the weather's good maybe I'll just ride my bike instead.

Thanks for the tip. I heard that the vintage ride was off this weekend b/c of the weather, though. Maybe next weekend...

Thanks - I have been wrestling over whether to sell a few stingy brims (I have too many hats but love them all so it's hard thinning the herd:o)
I wanted to ride it this weekend but am struggling with a cold....I hope to get on board next weekend as well:)

Wow I wish I were back there this time of year to ride those trains. I can't imagine those ceiling fans being very effective in the summer with all of the humidity and heat under ground.

A lot that heat actually comes from the AC systems on the trains.
I should def. be there Sunday (look for a hat - but it may be a much warmer hat!)
heading out to Tekserve later today, hope to catch the vintage train...

I believe yesterday was the last day for the trains till next Dec. (I could be wrong, you should double check). I agree, it was so gorgeous...we only took it down to 23rd and then walked all over town. I sure wish it was still that nice today!
