Road Cycling - flip-up sign to remind us that bikes are on top

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yakima used to make a magnetized sign that you'd put on the hood and that would flip up when you slow down, to remind you that you've got bikes on top of the car. They don't seem to make it any more. Does anyone know where to get something like this? (A sign on the rear view mirror doesn't seem as useful -- you just get used to it and then forget and crash the bikes ...)

Take the remote out of the car when you leave. Hard to run into the garage when you have to get out of the car.

OTOH, this doesn't work so well if there are other people in the house.

Also not so effective when you're driving across the country, trying to remember not to drive through (i.e. crash into) the drive-through, etc.

I live in an apartment complex with covered parking. The other day I spaced out coming home after picking the bike up from the LBS and drove into the space.
After I got out of the car I looked up in amazment, my bike did not hit. I felt like the biggest dumb ass. LOL
Thank God I have a low car if the bike seat had been 1 inch higher I would have been in a world of trouble.
I had to back the car up to get the bike off the rack.

You got lucky. here is what happened to my uncle.

He is a large man, 6ft+ tall 250+ pounds. He went mountain biking with some of his friends, all of them large men. 2 of them rode in my uncle's car and put their bikes on top of it.

End of day they return tired and hungry, pull into the garage forgetting about the bikes. When the weight of the 3 of got out of the car it wedged the bikes against the garage door above.

He ended up letting the air out of his car tires to lower it enough to close the garage door and then get the bikes off.

Lucky for them the only damage was scuff marks on the high points of the bikes.
