The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has tickets for $11 for those under 37. I've never been to a real symphony orchestra. Is it worth it? This Saturday is Handel's Messiah.

I agree. Totally worth it. Dress nicely even if it isn't required, and remember to turn off your phone.

Symphonies can be pretty intense.. Does not Detroit have a classical music station. ?.. Never hurts to take in every kind of experience to be a well rounded person.. .. Classical music is everywhere.. Example , William Tell's Overture might be thought of as the Quaker Oaks jingle.

Oh yeah, I'm a huge fan of classical music. I've only been to high school symphonies and that was back when I was in high school. I've just never had the chance to get out of town and to somewhere big enough to have a decent symphony.

I'd do it!

If you're a huge fan of classical music, then why would it even be a question? Normal-priced tickets usually start at $30, and student tickets can even be upwards of $20 depending on where you go.

Hearing professional musicians play live can't be compared to hearing high school students or listening to the radio. You should definitely go.

For what it's worth my wife plays with 2 part type Symphonies here in the N. Texas area, the Los Colinas Symphony (aka: Garland and Arlington Symphonies), as well as the Midland Odessa Symphony. A lot of professional symphony orchestras are having budget problems right now due to the economy so I encourage anyone that can please support your local professional musicians if you can.

I'd go if only to admire the carbon fiber cellos and violins.

Used to play oboe in a classical wind ensemble - I would love to go to listen to that and the price is darn reasonable. GO!

Totally worth it. $11 is a ridiculously low price, too.

37 is a weird cut off age, tho.

I bet it has something to do with an anniversary of something.

I would go. Then again, I do go from time to time. My son is a music major in college and we've always been fairly plugged in to classical music. In fact, both my sons listen to almost no contemporary music. They listen to classical most of the time.

"The Messiah" for $11? Don't miss it. "He was despised" always rocks me.

It takes 3 days to process the "37/11 club" request so I don't know if we'll make if for Messiah but the following weekend is Holst's The Planets and they said $11 tickets go on sale a week before the event. I would very much forgo Handel to listen to Holst.

At that price I'd buy a bunch and treat a lot of my friends.

Ooohhh - you totally have to go. I loved Holst's The Planets.

And like others said, dress up - at least a little.

Tough choice. "Messiah" would be my pref., although "Mars" and "Jupiter" are nice, also.

+1 on all the advice to go. LIVE music is just special compared to listening to CD's. I'll admit my bias here, as a part time amature musician. But I love to attend concerts that I'm not playing in too, listening to LIVE concerts is awesome.

Changed my Avatar pic in honour of this thread!
Actually playing Handel in that pic, but not Messiah.

Handel's Messiah is amongst the most overplayed classical works of all time. I have no idea how many times I've heard it -- or played it myself for that matter. I have every reason to be sick of that piece.

Despite being a violinist (I have a concert tonight), I don't particularly care for classical music -- I get tired of hearing the same music over and over. Yet I regard the Messiah as the best musical work I've ever heard.

I still get chilly bumps when I hear it done well and the last time I played it, I wanted to jump out of my seat at the end to cheer the choir which had truly done a magnificent job. The choral director who should also be sick of the Messiah after having done it so many times was moved to tears. You could feel the energy from the audience. It was a total effin' rush.

Everyone knows the Hallelujah chorus, but that's only a tiny part of the Messiah, and there are other sections that I like far better.

You should go and experience the whole thing. Most likely, you'll have a good time. If you find it boring, you can enjoy a nap. It's win-win.

The Messiah is a great live piece. So much more impressive than on CD. The Planets, I saw live at the NY Symphony (15-20 years ago). I was awestruck.

Make it happen.

I just talked with <3 2 Ride. To my surprise, she wants very badly to see The Messiah. I'm hoping I signed up in time. If I did, looks like we'll be heading to the symphony this weekend. :D

May I ask a personal question? Which orchestra(s) do you play with?

Do it! DSO is one of the best orchestras in the country and $11 per seat is a steal. And Messiah is a major work that everybody should hear at least once.
A bit of music trivia - if you go to Messiah, don't be surprised if the audience stands for the Hallelujah Chorus. That's a tradition dating back to the first performance, with King George in the audience. By the time they got to the Hallejujah Chorus, His Majesty was tired of sitting and stood up to stretch his legs. And of course if the King is standing, everybody else has to stand too! I don't know if they do it in Detroit but they still do it in lots of places.
Hope you enjoy it!

I'd like to enjoy this and I don't have enough experience to know how the kids will do during a 2 hour performance. They are little balls of energy...

Stand during the final chorus. Always.

Right now, I'm just with Western Oregon Symphony. I have no affiliation with WOU, but they're convenient, willing to let me miss many practices due to work, and you get to work with laid back students rather than extreme type A psychotics. Since I'm the only community member, it's always funny to see how I'm indicated on the program -- there's always something goofy. Typically, I'm listed as WOU faculty.

Hi - reason I asked was my sister plays flute in Oregon, but I asked her, and she's played with the Eastern Oregon Symphony, not Western.
(I just could not get back to this thread, until now due to search function not working too good)

Blaspheme! Violins are made out of wood, and that is all.

Etiquette lecture ahead:
UA, in case you don't remember from way back when, don't clap between movements, even if others do. Nothing screws up a good performance like an audience that doesn't know how to act. Just clap at the end, and once you're seated and the music starts, don't get up no matter what. The Messiah is a great piece, but it can be terrifically long and a stop at the boy's room before you head to your seat is advised.

Is that different than the Oregon Symphony (the one directed by Carlos Kalmar)?

That sucks for such a great piece of music.

UA - definitely do it. Classical is worth learning to appreciate if you don't already, and Messiah is an easy piece to like.
