Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Aluminum

hey ive been riding crmo/steel frames for awhile now and i like them but my friend mentioned aluminum not too long ago and it got me thinking.

I was just wondering what a few solid aluminum frames were that i could get for around $200 give or take. do those exist?

$200 gets you a Kilo stripper/TT frame and fork from bikeisland.com. Reynolds 520 steel frame. Not to shabby.

My 2003 Raliegh is made out of 6061 Aluminum, Works for me.

My bad. I misread your post. I thought you were looking for a steel frame.

Aluminum is not really a popular material in the FGSS crowd, although this has more to do with fashion than anything else.
If you just want too fool around with an aluminum frame, the Dawes SST or Motobecane team track are good low-cost options, with carbon forks.

I really can't think of much else in your price range.
Possibly a Cannondale Capo.

I think most time trial track frames are actually aluminum. Although none are exactly that cheap.
+1 on those Leaders, they're aluminum.

lol where can you find a capo for 200? ive been trying to find one in a 52

Motobecane Team Track is also an option. Those Leader frames may be cheap, but you still have to buy a fork and headset, which the Motobecane comes with.

those VISP frames on ebay were dirt cheap, well under two hundo if i recall correctly.

I bought a VISP really cheap for $51 + $70 shipping, but they are now going for a lot more and are not worth more than $200 that they now cost with shipping. They are indeed quite heavy, over 6 lbs for frame and fork, and mine weighs 2 lbs more than my old Schwinn Paramount P14 steel track bike with the same wheels. Also, forget about using wide tires in the rear; it is very tight.

Are you saying that a steel frame + fork < $200 will likely weigh more than 6 lbs?

Yes, a lot of steel frames+forks do easily weigh ~6 lbs. As a general rule, aluminum framesets, even relatively cheap ones, weigh less than that. That boat anchor of a frame you posted above could be an exception...I dunno, I've never seen one.

My steel frame and fork weighs 5.7 lbs, but the whole bike weighs 18.4 lbs. Even if your frame is a bit porky, it doesn't matter near as much to overall performance as the weight of your wheels does.
