Here is some interesting info. Thousand Oaks Ca is next the the Santa Monica mountains home of some of the most epic climbs (and decents anywhere). You've miles of 5%-20% on deserted mountain roads to crawl up and fly down. PCH is just the other side of the Santa Monica's and from PCH you can hit some awsome roads that will take you back to TO. Near perfect weather year round tops it all off. There were a good many riders but nothing like what I found when I moved to Austin.
Austin although not flat is far from "mountainess" lot's of rollers high summer temps with a nice dose of humidity thrown in just to make it really fun. Most of the roads are pretty well traveled by cars and most of these roads have very little shoulder. Yet the cycling comunity here just rocks! Our Tuesday night training ride get 35-40 riders! The Sat ride double that! Just around my housing developement the after work riders are out in force! I was just surprised that with all the SoCal has going for it regarding cycling Austin is by far more cycling centric.

Tonawanda NY. Northern suburb of Buffalo. Great place to ride between April and November. :) Someday I may take up snow skiing, got to have something to do outside besides snowblowing the rest of the year.

Everett WA 30 miles north of Seattle but have lived in Seattle, Cleveland, St Louis, Duluth and beautiful downtown Leoti Kansas (where I was born)
You're right, there are a few shoulders but having grown up in Texas where you have a nice shoulder just about everywhere - it takes some getting used to.

2 hours drive SW of Toronto Ontario. And chad, you know how I wish I was climbing that escarpment in hamilton right now, don't you? But then again, I like clean air. All jokes my friend. I'll frequent the Donut ride in Toronto a bit.
I was just surprised that with all the SoCal has going for it regarding cycling Austin is by far more cycling centric.
Cycling in SoCal suffers the same fate that many other activities do there. Too many other things to do. Yes, the landscape offers a tremendous amount of options but given the population base, I was alway surprised at how few new riders there were on on club rides. (new riders being the lifeblood)
Austin Texas? I can't imagine for a second why cycling is so popular there. :)
