Ok, seemed that the pro cilantro crowd was taking over the food hate thread.
A couple of great ideas were posted. If I buy some cilantro at a place like whole foods, is it possible to plant them and have them take root or do I just need to go get some potted cilantro?

hmmm cilantro...I used to despise the stuff...soapy flavour etc. Now I use it in all my mexican dishes. After I went to mexico and saw it used properly and tasted the sheer awesomeness of it with a little baby lime (don't know what they are called, but they are better than normal limes)...hmmmmmm
hmmmm mexican....why the hell can't I find a decent mexican restaurant in the timberland of ice and snow...arg

Buy cilantro potted; it will not sprout. Late in the season it will seed, which you can dry and plant, or have coriander to grind:)

Not a big cilantro fan, some. But when I love it when I use it to make sofrito.

Plant seeds once the soil is warm. Nice sunny spot. Replant about every two weeks. You can either keep cutting it back or let it go to seed -- the seeds, as mentioned above, are coriander.

(reply with quote is not working again)NOT TRUE! I planted cilantro seeds a couple weeks ago. I just noticed them popping thru the soil yesterday!
FINALLY found Cilantro & a few other herb seeds at Lowe's (many places don't carry them this time a year).

No, I meant it won't sprout from cuttings. He wanted to buy a bunch and plant the stems.

I grow cilantro every year, generally from seeds. I save the seeds after the plant starts to die. If you don;t have seeds, buy a seedling from a nursery (available in late spring) and make sure to cut it back during the growing season or it will go to seed early. Once summer is over, let it seed and collect same. BTW the seeds are coriander and good in sauces and on chicken.
Nothing better than fresh cilantro. I can't get enough of its fresh herby smell! :thumb:

Cilantro is easy easy easy to grow...I didn't think about growing it under florescents...I'll definitely try it
It is an annual and seems to grow best from seeds.

You could try rooting a stem in some moist potting mix or vermiculite.

I love cilantro, but it's proven a pretty delicate plant in our house. We've planted cilantro twice and its died twice. Meanwhile, the basil went nuts until it got smothered by the tomatoes this year, the parsley's been going for years now, and the rosemary (my favorite) is chugging along.

+1 on Cilantro! I've been eating Mexican Food for 50 years. Where has the stuff been hiding?

Any plants I try to grow inside are eaten by the cat. I wonder if I can figure out a workaround, given that I really like fresh cilantro. :(

My mom hangs pots of cilantro, basil, parsley, thyme from the ceiling by her kitchen window. They're up high enough that the cats can't get to them. She does need a ladder to cut whatever she wants to use but at least she gets to them instead of the beasties.
+1 for cilantro. It's delicious scattered on top of curried lentils.

I know what you guys are doing. "Cilantro" is a code word for "Marijuana" isn't it?

Cilantro is easy to grow and relatively cheap to buy sprouted. I have grown it several times only to find it grows too fast for my own good. It grows like a weed and will look like tumbleweed if not properly clipped.

Time to crack open this old chestnut again with this (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/14/dining/14curious.html).
Back in PR it does grow like a weed, everywhere.

I wish they sold cilantro lotion. And cilantro shampoo and conditioner.
Not a big cilantro fan, some. But when I love it when I use it to make sofrito.
me no likey sofrito. Sazon (con culantro y achiote) and Adobo (con culantro y achiote) is all I need... maybe some oregano for the looks.
My wife has a gag reflex when she smells cilantro. Like, we can't walk through the "cilantro section" of our local Asian market. I have to taste test salsa at restaurants, too.
I can take it or leave it, so I like threatening to make her a cilantro mohito, or using cilantro instead of hops in a beer I brew.

Lime cilantro dressing, FTW:
Juice of four limes, preferably squeezed with one of those hand squeezers they use in Mexico and Latin America- it gets the oil out of the skins
1/4c white vinegar
1/4c sugar
1-2tsp salt (to taste)
1 medium bunch cilantro, chopped coarsely, stems and leaves (about 2c chopped)
1c mixed canola and extra virgin olive oil
Blenderize everything but the oil. When well mixed and the cilantro has been reduced to little fragments, add the oil in a steady stream while blender is on low. Blend for another minute on high to homogenize.
Use as a regular salad dressing, or as a fabulous marinade for grilling.

Curious whether adobo in PR is the same stuff as in the Philippines. There, it's the result of simmering meat (pork or chicken) in a mixture of soy sauce, vinegar, sugar and seasonings for a couple hours. We cook it here every month or so.
I wonder if thise little lime Maelstrom referred to are actually calimansi.

I was at a Korean restaurant yesterday and ended up trying a cilantro salad. This was really odd because I've only seen cilantro as a garnish/seasoning and not the base for an entire salad.
Can you grow cilantro in a 110+ degree desert climate?

Yessir!
We have 2 planter pots and an entire section of the garden for cilantro. Probably the most used herb in my house (with Basil a close 2nd-we have 8 of those plants in this year!)

I love cilantro. It's awesome in Mexican, Indian and Thai. I have a hard time growing it here, though.

Gitarzan, that NYTimes article also popped up all the way over here on the Pacific.
http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=45337 cilantro thread is in a forum all about the Baja peninsula.
I don't put cilantro in everything, but, my guacamole, salsa recipes and ceviche recipes demand it, along with lots of lime juice. Have also found a handful of gringos who dislike cilantro. Have never found a mexican not liking this weed.

Scrambled Eggs with Sauteed Onions and Picante with LOTS of fresh Cilantro from the garden (our first harvest!!!), Served in corn tortillas.
Yum, Yum, Yum. It was so good.
