Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - posting problems - staff attention required

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Tom and BF staff:
It is really hard to avoid the impression that the folks running this site are inattentive at best to the problems that the new site has created. For example, the bug of receiving a blank white screen when selecting the start new post or reply to htread buttons has gone uncorrected for weeks. This bug has been decribed by me and others in the tech thread but it remains. The page has apparently tremendously wide formating and one must tab over many page widths to reach the actual posting text box area. Annoying to say the least. Please correct this.

'Doesn't happen on my Blackberry (320 x 240 pix) or my 1280 x 800 pix laptop. 'Could be your 'puter but who knows?
No, it is a problem on some browsers, but IB is going for a big bug-fix release rather than trying to deploy fixes one at a time. As an SE, I have to say that it's the right way to go for a list of reasons, not the least of which is better testing. Let's hope the release is soon.
Hmm..
Well, I can't post any new posts either. It looks like some people can and some can't.
The truth is that bikefroums.net is really just an entertainment medium, so I am not going to get all bent out of shape about it.
It wouild be a nice friendly gesture if the site managers could just advise us to come back in January or March or whatever when they plan to have the bugs worked out.

We'll be down for a bit tonight for a code push that may address at least some of these issues , at least. I don't have a list of what is going to be fixed as of yet. We'll basically find out together.
I still can't post a new thread, any clue why????

Ahem,
When I click "Reply to thread" , the software responds as if I clicked "Reply with Quote"- as plainly evidenced above.
I hope this problem and the others gets fixed.
Well, it's tomorrow now, and we still can't post a new thread. Any word on when you're going back to the version that actually worked?

I cannot post new thread, either.
Some say this is a good thing, however, I disagree.

Until they get around to fixing the problem of starting threads using Internet Explorer, it is no problem starting threads if you use Firefox.

OK, we have a bug in the software that is creating an issue with IE6, 7 and some versions of IE 8 and apparently, AOL Browser as well. You can get around this issue by using one of the following browsers:
Firefox Download: http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.html?product=firefox-3.5.5&os=win&lang=en-US
Google Chrome: http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html
Safari 4: http://www.apple.com/safari/download/
They are all free for use, and I'm to the point that I'm suggesting them as an expedient to get people able to post. I'm sorry about the inconvenience, and the tech guys are working on the IE issue, but we haven't had a huge amount of luck as of yet.

The expedient fix for the "I can't post a new thread" bug is actually quite simple.
The new thread window does open. I just opens up in a reeeeeeallly wide window. Check at the bottom of your screen. A scroll bar will be there. Drag it over to the right (about half way, for me). The text entry box will be there. You just have to want it bad enough to scroll to the right, that's all.
Posting on the BF.com forums is becoming so troublesome that many are sure to conclude that it simply isn't worth the trouble and will leave the site. I have tried posting even as late as 8 December and it times out and drops the post.
I appreciate that BF.com is only entertainment and that it is a free site, but if the site owners want to maintain the level of activity that the site has built up over the years, they really need to get the bugs worked out quick. A couple of days to work out bugs is understandable, but this site has had troubles for weeks now.

Nope. Did that. 10 miles over the right hand ad banner shows up, (naturally!), but no text box. Using IE8, WinXP SP3.

Yes, you've said that. See, I ACTUALLY read the thread before I started flapping my gator! :thumb:
I was just letting Mike Mills know that his IE work-around wasn't universal, that's all. As for posting, I don't WANT to use an alternative browser. I even have FF on my machine already for crosschecking websites, but I don't like using it.
So obviously, initiating new posts must not be that important to me right now! But every day that goes by, BF loses more and more of their following, and become less and less attractive AS an entertainment venue, (as if you weren't already keenly aware of this!)

I also feel that using an alternative browser is a non-solution, not even as an expedient.
The idea that the new software was not validated on several/all the browsers is well,.... you draw your own conclusion from that one.

Running a parallel installation was ALWAYS the way of it in the business world .... course, as someone else pointed out, this isn't business ..... except to those who rely on the ad income this board generates!
Bet they'll do it NEXT time! :thumb:
