Foo - Cycling Survey For A Class Project

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello all. My name is Will, and I have joined your forum because I have a class project. The project is to write a survey, and get 100 samples, then write a paper based on the survey results. Being a cyclist myself, I decided to make my survey cycling related, specifically collecting info on people who use their bicycles as transport.

So if you would be so kind as to oblige me and fill it out, the survey is very short, and my grade is depending upon it. Thank you :)

3) How often do you ride your bike as transport?

-Very rarely as transportation

4) How far do you generally ride your bike?

- Seven or more miles

5) What is your primary reason for riding a bike as transportation?

- Exercise

Your poll assumes using the bike as transportation and not for recreation/fun. I don't ride for transportation, unless my truck is in the shop. Your distances fit with your assumption. Many of my rides are 75mi in length or more.

I'm going to want to see the paper when you're done.

1)-Male
2)-19 to 28
3)0x per week winter, 2-10x per week summer, depending on my mood, weather, etc. Probably averages out to around 3x/week overall in the summer.
4)1-3 miles if for transportation, 15-50 miles if for entertainment (entertainment rides not included in the above count)
5)Pleasure/exercise (more of the former as I don't really need more of the latter)

So, the only reason you have joined BikeForums is to gather information for a school project, eh? Pity you didn't have the motivation to join just for the sake of a true interest in cycling.

Just what is the ambit of your "project"? You provide absolutely no details, yet people here are gullible enough to provide information you have solicited. For all we know, you are profiling people on Foo to stalk them.

Otherwise, why don't you get off your backside, move away from the lazy-arsed computer, and take your survey out on to the streets and do direct interviews with the people who really count.

You might get a somewhat more accurate idea of just where cycling sits among the general population, rather than skewing your figures by drawing the information from an already biased source (albeit one that is at the lower end of cycling participation on these forums).

Or... maybe you are part of this current generation of spin where you "make the figures speak your language" no matter if the figures say the opposite. You'd make a fine employee for Internet Brands, in that case.

I'm sorry, what have I done to warrant the hostility? Its just for a project that I'm trying to do for an english class in junior college. I don't particularly care if the results are skewed, I just want to get it done so I can pass the class. And I doubt that age and cycling habits are enough info to 'stalk' people, as you say.

And don't presume to know everything I'm doing. Since I need 100 results, I'm collecting from every source I can, which, surprisingly, includes people off the street. Like I said its just a dang english assignment. This isn't research for a project, I'm not making money off this survey, we're not trying to launch a new product, or anything like that.

Furthermore, you must not have very much respect for the people of this forum if you're going to call them 'gullible', and say that I should interview people 'who really count'.

If you really had thought about it, you would have put this in the Commuting forum where posters do actually use their bicycles for transportation.

k, I'll bite

1) What is your gender? F
2) What is your age? grr
-50 or older

3) How often do you ride your bike as transport?
Ride my bike as commute to work as well as to the store and any other place I have to go

4) How far do you generally ride your bike? 7 miles to work and back (more like 15 miles a day though with shopping included) - it's basically dealing with the heart of downtown traffic, i.e. entrance/exits off expressways, retail businesses parking and their occupants in and out of their cars while I have one to two lanes pacing me - ---- not fun.

However I ride offroad as recreation and I do long range road miles on the roadie of 60- >100 miles.

5) What is your primary reason for riding a bike as transportation? It is my vehicle, and it is preferred. Love the open air and prefer it. Car free for more than 14 yrs, because I can, meaning I live in a city and why do I want to drive <3 miles to work - although it is nasty bad traffic in a city - and also so I can spend $1.50 a day parking in a bad neighborhood - or $5.00 a day in an attached garage next to my work place? I'll change my car habits when I change areas - but with car only for work should it become prevalent.
