Today I had my first crash, after a year of cycling. It was right at the end of a group ride, and happened just in front of the bike shop. Fortunately, I wasn't going too fast, but went down hard and felt my head bang against the pavement. The helmet - now replaced - had a crack down one side. If not for that helmet, it would be my head that would have a crack down one side. As it was, I had a moment of dizziness, a scratch on my hand (thank you, padded, full-fingered gloves!), some miscellaneous aches and some minor scrapes on the bike.

So thank you, Helmet. I'm still always amazed that anyone questions the value of wearing helmets while cycling.

To be completly honest I haven't worn my helmet for anything other than serious off road mountain biking. They give me a headache, i even have one of those 150$ (well in 1999) helmets that ventilate better...

I'm trying to find one that 1) matches my bike 2) is a road helmet (no visor) 3) is breathable/lightweight enough to not give me a headache and ruin my rides.

If I start riding with the club arond here I'm going to be stuck wearing my headache helmet :( *That doesn't match lol*

I've never hit my head since 1999 (well one time...I hit a car at 40KM/h that pulled in front of me...mangled my bike and had limited mobility in my neck...my ear was black it was bruised so bad...I had taken my helmet off to go into Canadian tire which was one block up after a training ride...then sprinted back and this guy pulled in front of me when i was coming across the road...looking back I shouldn't of been sprinting on the side walk...but I was...and he pulled up past the stop sign :( )

Sorry to steal the thread ... just thought I'd comment on my own idiocy.

ya i was riding for over a month(fresh with the used road bike) without a helmet. i started lengthening my rides and picked up a helmet. the other day i went for a short ride through the park and decided not to wear my helmet because there is almost no car traffic. man i felt so uncomfortable. like driving a car without a seatbelt. no more of that. helmet goes always now.

Good move. I always thought helmets were a placebo till my first headbanger. Hey maybe that helmet is under warranty. Check out the mfg's web site for details.

i know nothing about your head, but i'd say the problem isn't breathable or lightweight. you're probably wearing a helmet that's too small, or too tight.

i ride a road bike with a trek interval helmet(has a visor). doesnt seem to be a problem for me, actually keeps a little sun out from the top of my sun glasses. though im not lance armstrong, so aerodynamics are super important to me.

They are not thinking. that is why they don't have a helmet on.

Since moving from California to Indiana, I find very few bikers wearing helmets here in Indiana, whereas in California I found very few who didn't. I can't imagine why Indiana would be so much different then California. But glad to hear your safe, that's what the helmet is there to do; it's money well spent.
