Mountain Biking - Things I learned today

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi, I'm a long time cyclist (road / commuter) but new to mountain biking / cross country riding. For everyone's amusement, I'd like to share some things I learned today:
- Pedaling through sand is HARD
- Fallen logs with no bark are ridiculously slippery after two days in the rain
- So are pine needles
- I definitely need a helmet
- Those cute little chainrings I've seen more and more on the road are actually pretty useful on trails
- Hybrid bikes with street-friendly, low tread tires really suck for anything not paved
But most importantly, I was reminded that beer tastes really, really good after a hard ride
Hope everyone's having a good weekend, look forward to getting to know everyone as I spend more time in the woods!

Awesome! Glad you had a good time and hopefully many more to come. Sand sucks. Mud sucks, too.
Sand is hard to ride in, but great to crash in.
You never said whether or not you had FUN.

The sand I hit here is normally unexpected and matches the hard pack pretty well so when I hit it there is no other way to go but down due to pretty much hitting a brick wall!

All Hail the trail. Welcome to the world of dirt. Plus you don't have to listen for traffic behind. Get that helmet really soon. Last October I had a "Moment of Clarity" as my head hit a second rock, I thought, "this is a great helmet." From the depression in the plastic and Styrofoam, that was an understatement. But that bifferony is now just a point of pride.

Fair enough, but wait until you have a bad day on the trail, though.

A bad day on the trail still beats a good day at the office.
Unless it ends in the hospital. Then it's just a bad day all around.
i havent ridden my MTB since sat(epic cold weather). Its alot more fun than road biking man, welcome!
(this coming from a road cyclist of about 4 yrs)
