Southern California - How to deal with foxes

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So today on my ride I saw a family of three foxes. Now usually this is not an issue because they are usually just crossing the road and are gone. However today, the family was heading down the road iin the same direction I was heading. So I was very uneasy about getting too close or passing. I slowly pedaled for about 5 minutes behind them until they got off the road. Was this unnecessary? Anything else I could have done?

I wouldn't really worry unless a fox is acting erratically - a possible sign of rabies. Otherwise, they rarely attack humans. I'd imagine standing up on the bike and getting close to them would quickly scare them off as you will appear as an even larger than usual predator.
Foxes!! Just invite them up to your batchelor pad

FTW.
My swinging brother Yorgi beat me to it. :( I can only add this boss, American link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9SaKYFR6ms).
Next time you see them on the road, just make a loud noise and they'll bolt. (Unless of course you need more time to get out your camera.)
