Has anyone heard when the Henry Hudson Bridge will be open to bike/foot traffic? I've heard nothing more precise than 2010.

I live near there and looks like it could take ALL of 2010

I walk to the bridge (Riverdale side) every couple of weeks just to see if there's been any progress or signs posting an end date...nothing yet.

Thanks. I wasn't biking when it was open so I don't know what I'm missing. I actually don't mind the trip down Broadway, except for the Broadway bridge and the lunar landscape road surface for the few hundred yards.

I was wondering the same thing. I moved to Riverdale right after the bridge closed, so I've never ridden it. Anyone have experience riding across the HHB?
I also wonder where is the connection to the path at Dyckman street, which seems to just end with a bunch of steps?

The bridge is a better commute during Daylight, as you ride through the park and it lacks light and you will be ALONE
in a bad spot.
How to get to the bridge from Dickman is simple. After you go down the stairs and start biking on Dyckman make your 1st left and go down the hill and turn Left. Go under the highway and make a right into the park. Bike alone the Rail Lines until you hit a stairway overpass, dismount take bike over rail lines.
Bike to the left and when the path splits in about 2 blocks go to the RIGHT up hill, NOT LEFT DOWN HILL.
The uphill will take you to a short steep incline and up to the Bridge.
That said, There is NO BIKING on the bridge. Never been stopped, some have and been told to walk it. My suggestion is take a peak, walk 2 yards then bike off. In all my years of living in Riverdale which is now 21, I have biked or walked over the bridge perhaps a dozen times. The park path was pretty beat up and they fixed it just about the time they shut the bridge path.

just rode up there today for the first time ever. (new to cycling, bike is 3 weeks old) i got to dyckman and didn't see any other way to go except the greenway and i really didn't want a slow hectic ride down harlem river drive so I just turned around and went back down the hudson. Of course when i got to the GWB and hit the big hill going 20mph there had to be joggers at the bottom who couldn't hear me yelling that I was going to go between them and then of course they got deer in headlights and I lost all my momentum! What is proper etiquette for a situation like that? I assume I'm in the wrong since all the signs say "go slow" lol!

I assume Under the GWB and towards the tennis courts?
Simple answer: Use your brakes and go slow, purchase a bell may help but is required on bikes in NY state.
I'm not rying to be cute but there is plenty of time to slow down. If you can not regulate your speed then you may injur yourself and others.
If you have a hybrid, try to not pull BOTH brake levers in a DEATH grip as you make flip over. This most likely would not happen at that fast decent but could happen if you were going more slowly. The front brake if grabbed real hard is the bad boy. Feathering/regulating your speed with shorter half pulls will hel as will experience and time.
Suggestion: Go to Barnes and Noble and take a look at some cycling books or go Bicycling.com and read read read
Good Luck Robert

The bike path/pedestrian walkway over the Henry Hudson Bridge is finally OPEN!!
I haven't had a chance to ride there, but this evening as I drove past the entrance on the Bronx side (southbound) 2 cyclists had just come off the bridge and confirmed that it is indeed open.
Quick question: does the path only run along the southbound side of the bridge? I know there is a walkway on the northbound side as well, but I have never been across, and have no clue where it leads.
Oh yeah, it's open. ;)
Walked across Yesterday.
It puts you out on the SW side of the bridge.
Go straight ahead and you will see a path sloping down to the South.
Follow this South to the bridge over the Metro North tracks.
It will put you out near the southern Inwood Hill Park ball fields.
Keep heading South along the path by the ball fields and you will hit Dyckman/200 by the river.
From there, it's a hop/skip/jump to the Greenway.
The East walkway has been closed off and converted into an observation point only.
This sucks, but then; the PA doesn't want anyone walking through their secure compound.

Many many years ago I walked out on the upper level/northbound pedestrian path to get some photos of the Amtrak rail bridge. I only went halfway but looking at Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=henry+hudson+bridge&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=36.778911,52.558594&ie=UTF8&hq=henry+hudson+bridge&hnear=&ll=40.876304,-73.924178&spn=0.001073,0.001604&t=h&z=19&iwloc=A), the upper level path seems to lead to the east side of the toll plaza. From there, there appears to be a parking lot that circles around under the lower level. There also appears to be a path into Inwood Hill Park.
Last time I was up there, before the bridge construction, the upper level/north bound path was closed with a gate similar to those used on the GWB and the lower lever/Southbound path was the only one in use. Maybe they need that to keep photographers out :p
Yeah, there is a way down off the E side of the bridge that puts you out towards the N end of Inwood Hill Park.
Unfortunately, it apparently interferes with the PAs security plans. It is closed to the public, probably permanently.

went there today, the upper level path doesn't lead to the east side, it leads to the west side. nice little crossing.

Does that mean the upper level path DOES provide access to Manhattan, same as the lower level?

i apologize, I misread and misstyped. I actually took the lower level path across into the Bronx. I had never been to this bridge before and had to do some searching to find it and stumbled upon it ridign through random trails in inwood hill park. i did see one other cyclist coming into manhattan who nicely dismounted and let me blow by since I was going downhill at that point. I didn't do much exploring to notice if I could have gotten across anywhere else. going back I took the broadway bridge.
