In case you are looking for a new bottom bracket ...

And I'll point out that the word crazy is used with admiration. ;)

Depending on how many chainrings you use, 'cos some "crazies" have two.
For a single the ideal length is approx 113mm if using a SA rear hub.

There's some question about whether or not they'll work with the wide R20 bottom bracket. I certainly hope so, though, because I've got one I'm trying to fix up and would love to find an easy solution for the bottom bracket problem. Hopefully someone will try one and report back soon, because I'd like to get back to working on the Twenty after the holidays are over.

how wide is the R20 BB?

well the Raleigh BB is from 73mm to 76mm, on frames Ive measured.

It says the spindle has JIS tapers. Doesnt that mean its the fatter Japanese axle?
Have 3 of those Japanese cranks with nice fluted arms and a sort of sheild insignia. Dont fit any axle Ive got though. :(

Is there any reason that a shop with a BB facing tool couldn't take a wider BB down to 68mm?

I recut the threads and narrowed the bb shells on a few old Raleighs.

I used a Var bb threading tool on my blue RSW. I cut the threads in as far as the tool would go. Then cut the shell width down with a hacksaw. I would have used a facing tool. But it had mysteriously dissapeared from my work. :/ So just used a hacksaw to cut the shell down.
I also recut the threads on the forks, with the fork threading tool there

Actually, I think it was saying that it **might** work on some 20's. It didn't work on his with a 76mm shell, but seemed to think that it would if the width of the shell was shortened a bit.. A 71mm shell would likely work, provided that nothing was standing proud of the threads. So, if you 20 has a shell width less than 76mm or so & there is nothing inside the shell that sticks out more than the threads, there's a chance it will work.
