for easy math:
4cyl 4 stroke 1 liter motor @ 1,000 rpm
1 stroke out of 4 is a power stroke, therefore 1 out of 4 strokes is also an exhaust stroke
for those that don't know
Intake, Compression, Power, Exhaust
so
1,000cc motor/4 cylinders = 250cc per cylinder
@ 1,000rpm, thats 1,000 x 250cc = 250,000cc of exhaust per minute (again, for easy math, i.e. at idle)
250,000cc/60sec = 4,166cc/sec = 4.16L/sec = a little more than a gallon of exhaust per second
so every time when you come to an intersection
the cars at idle
you can imagine that at a minimum
each car is dumping at least 1 gallon of exhaust per second
in 1 minute its at least 60 gallons of exhaust per car
most cars are not simply 1 liter
most cars are over 1 liter
and how long do we sit at an intersection?
more than a minute?
