What do you use for a bike stand when you are working on your bike?

I dont use one. I just let my bike stand up. If the wheeles are removed I flip it upside down. If the seat and everything is removed it should be light enough to pick up.

Got a Park PCS-1 a couple of weeks ago. Works great. $140 out the door.

A bike stand is useful for just about every type of maintainence. Its just easier to work on something when its up at your height, instead of down on the ground. The Park stands are nice, but even a piece of wood hanging from the the rafters in your garage with a hook on it can be helpful. You don't really 'neeed' it for anything, but it makes routine work faster and more comfortable.

at home, i flip it upside down. i'm thinking about getting one of the ultimate workstands, but that'll have to wait until i have more space.

at work, i used to have the park portable work stand (the one with the wheels), because i'm just in the warehouse assembling bikes, and it didn't need to look super professional, but then my boss ordered the professional work stand for me. soooo much more stable, higher, and has that nice little tray to put small, commonly used tools, and some parts.

I have the Park Tool PCS-5. Works great. Plus, with all the bikes I have, I usually keep one bike in there all the time to save space, since I live in a little studio/jr. one bedroom.

I've just been turning mine upside down to work on it. But recently I discovered that in this unnatural position, the transmission does not behave as it would when you actually ride it, making it very difficult to adjust system. One problem I had was that the rear derailler arm was being pulled down by gravity to the point that its cogs were hitting the gears on the back wheel. Plus the chain hangs differently, and the front derailler has different forces to contend with when it shifts.

I think that I'm gonna have to get a stand in the next few months in order to keep the bike running in top shape.

Ultimate Pro. Works great and folds up for easy storage. Even has a carrying/storage bag and a removable toolbox.

A bike repair stand is a very convenient tool for bike work. As someone else noted, performing various adjustments on a bike while it is upside down sitting on the floor, usually means those same adjustments will have to be done when the bike is rightside up. A compromise approach to a repair stand is a stationary trainer that holds the bike by the rear wheel skewer. I still use one of these on occassion instead of a repair stand. One thing they're really good for is checking your drive train adjustments. You can get on the bike with a "load" on the system and then verify you derailleur adjustments. Good luck!

My stand (wouldn't want to work on the bike without it) is made by Tacx (Cycle Motion Stand T3075). It's stable, foldable, and holds the bike by the front fork or by the rear drop-outs.

I have a rope hanging from two eye hooks screwed into my rafter. It's cheap and easy. Just make sure you're good at tying knots!

100% absolutely spot-on!

My wife kept telling me to just get a repair stand and I wouldn't because I was thinking that only a pro wrench should have one or need one...

finally I gave in and bought a Park on sale for a tad over a 100 dollars...

It makes everything easier and more efficient.

The stand takes up little room and completely breaks down when not in use... honestly at this point in time-just 3 months later after having purchased one-I cannot understand how I did ANY work without one.

It's worth it... buy one.

What do you use for a bike stand when you are working on your bike?

I use a Park Tool PCS-9 stand to do extensive maintenance work but for routine check before a ride and small repair jobs, I use one of those:

in fact my bike is always on storage on this stand. These small stands are great as they keep the rear wheel off the ground and allow gear/break/wheel adjust/tuning, I used one of those as repair stands for several years before buying the PCS-9.

I used some 2x4's made into a portable stand that is made sturdy by metal angle brackets at all the joints. The bike is held on by utility hooks avail at hardware store. It provides pleanty of access for most things I need to do and I've screwed on some cup hooks to hang tools on that I use all the time. It doesn't beat one that you can buy but the price does.

Everything exept puttining the wheels in the hangers, then the bike goes upside down.
The clothes line works too.
