I don't think you can buy them, but I have heard about chains for bikes. I think you can make them though. Here is how:

With the DIY ones.. forget about it, there are some companies which make tire-chain setups which are easier to remove. I also warn that tire chains aren't for asphalt because the ride will be quite harsh. If i were you i would make your own studded tires with the smallest and minimum number of screws possible.. there is a sticky thread on how todo this.

I'm currently riding 4 season Continental tires on my road bike. Can anyone suggest methods for getting better traction, short of studded tires? I don't think any of the studded tire options fit my bike ( a Lemond Sarthe).

I believe Kool Stop still markets their Quik Kleats for winter riding. You can't find them on their website, but supposedly, you can order them by phoning their toll-free number. Good luck.

If he doesn't have clearance for studded tires, I don't think TIRE CHAINS are going to fit guys.

I've had some limited success with file-tread type tires, at the lowest pressure you can run, with sticky rubber compounds. This will probably mean a narrow set of CX tires, maybe tubulars.

Suffice to say these will be outclassed by knobby/studded set-ups in deeper snow/smooth ice, but they I think they stick way better than a stock road tire.

Buy a beater for winter. Put studs on that.

I like the idea of chains, especially a dyi option. It would certainly be cheaper then buying even the cheapest studded tires, Innova.

Problem with the dyi chain setup is that you have to have disk breaks. I don't :(
