returned to cycling about 5 yrs ago,
ride about 30 to 70 miles a week,
on an old wheeler 3000
more interested in sightseeing and camera targets than performance,
would like to build endurance to do a century... in my own time
planning a 60 mile trip toward that end
thata about it

Sounds like the perfect way to start back! Take your time with it, find the enjoyment, and before you know it, you'll find yourself gaining massive benefits you've been looking for. THEN maybe you'll start thinking performance.... :D

Winfield is next to Wheaton, Warrenville and West Chicago out in the western burbs.
Whoa! Those are places I had to stretch my mind to remember where they were exactly! :D I bet they have great riding over in that area. Isn't it a bit less crowded than staying in Chicago?

The IPP goes thru that area, take the mountain bike out for that ride. As far as the road riding goes, some of the main streets are crowded but there are still alot of good roads to ride on.

Welcome to the forums fellow Illinoinian, even if you are from up around the "state of Chicago! :D " I'm southwest of Peoria near Canton. Aside from Peoria, there aren't too many riders down these parts. But we have some acceptable riding areas without too much traffic.

thanks for welcome
reg guy, maybe next year on 100, thanks for info. do you have any experience with hennepin canal paths? koffe, thanks for encouragement. too many busy roads here, at least for me, would prefer less or slower. Dont like getting buzzed by 50mph traffic on Farnsworth, sooner rebel, maybe better roads still further west. the trails are interesting for me though would be interested in roads, need to do more research

I haven't ridden the Hennepin canal towpath for quite a few years. I believe it has been upgraded since my last assault. Back then it was all grass. It may be all ag-lime now. It was a beautiful ride as I recall. Be aware that it is (very slightly) downhill in both directions from the feeder canal near Sheffield. If you start in Sheffield, it's a little harder to get back.
The I&M canal trail is pretty rideable too.

If it's not to far try the roads west of Randall Road. Good road riding, not to much traffic and flat to rolling hills. My rides usually are west of North Aurora, Batavia and Geneva. Agree about Farnsworth it's a bad road for road bikes and their riders.
