Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Should I buy this frame?

Found a mid 70's colnago for $400, seems like a steal to me. pics belows:

If it turns out that it's late 70's - early 80's is it no longer worth it?

do not build that thing as fixed if you buy it.

Why not? Forgive me that I'm new to this whole thing.. I'm just now getting into building bikes after riding them for years and years.

Ahh. That's kinda what I figured you'd say. Yeah it's possible that I put gears on this one and use a different bike for my single project. I was mostly just curious if I was getting a good deal or not. Think so?

Sweet frame, but unless you have a lot of dough and can afford to just buy it, or you were really envisioning a fixed gear build, I'd put the $400 towards a legit track frame.

You should ask the guys in the classic and vintage forum and see what they say.

Dude, I have no problem answering your question, no matter how you are thinking of building it, geared or fixed, if you like it and have the bones to throw at it, by all means buy it and enjoy it. :) and don't forget to post pics of it after it's all built up!

I usually post over in C & V, but I have to throw in another vote for gears. Seriously, buy the frame even if you zero intention to build now. You won't regret it. I did that with my Colnago Master Extra Light and it worked out great. Just need a dash of patience! That will give you time to research gruppos, replica decal sets, and all that other fun stuff. By the way, does it fit you?

It fits me perfectly.. That's why I was so eager to buy it. I've been struggling to find an older steel frameset I like that would fit me well.

Cross posts don't bug me, especially since you seem legit. You just want to make an informed purchase. I would as well.

Lowball him and see what happens. Then, build it up fixed..to liven it up a bit. Or go the vintage route and throw an old groupset on it.

Personally, fixed is more fun.

try and get him to go down like $50, but if he won't budge then you should still buy it. Another option is to build it up SS for now and then put gears on it later when you get enough money for an old campy groupset

I vote for build it up SS/Fixed, but don't hack off the braze ons, that way you can go geared later if you want. Bear in mind though, that $400 is probably about 1/2 of what you'll pay to build it up with decent components.

Next question: Any suggestions for an appropriate wheelset? Or components in general? I had some stuff picked out, but I'd really like to get as much input as I can. Thanks!

lol it shoulda been step 3. ????? and step 4. sweet fixie bro! I would have still gotten the reference =P I'm a little hesitant to just go gung ho on the guides because I don't want to have to repaint right away.

That was sarcasm. Plllllease do not destroy this bike. It deserves better than that. Buy it if you want gears only and do not repaint it! There are cheaper frames to be had that will better serve your purposes.

That's exactly what I did with a beautiful 1970s Ron Cooper frameset. Using it as a FG won't hurt it provided you don't hack anything off, repaint it or do really crazy stunts. Eventually you can make it into a period correct vintage multispeed.

great here comes another nice italian vintage frame that you will see with formulas/velocity DV's and sugino rd cranks and whatever NJS components he or she can cobble together.

record hubs, dt swiss revolution spokes, silver open pro rims, record bb, record cranks, mks track pedals, campy seatpost, cinelli stem, cinelli drop bars, cinelli cork tape. campy delta brakes, campy road levers.

if you follow this list you will have a beautiful and classic bike i would be jealous of. i would MUCH rather this be done with the bike than to see a picture of it built up with some crappy shimano sti levers...
