Bicycle Mechanics - bottom bracket + washer

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just got a used trek 5500 frame and the only thing the frame came with was a washer. the inside diamater was the same as the hole for the bottom bracket. I'm assuming that it goes on the drive side of the bottom bracket to disperse pressure (seeing as it's a carbon fiber frame)
am I wrong or is this for something else? or was this just a random washer in the box? (it was attached to the bottom bracket with a zip tie)
Thanks!
I'm digging this building bike stuff, if only I knew what I was doing

Thanks, I figured it went on that side but wasn't sure why.
