Interesting. Perhaps I shouldn't worry about tight hamstrings anymore.

Oh yes you should, particularly if your low back hurts.

I rarely stretch. Usually I just take a few miles of riding easy at the start of a long ride to warm up. If I stretch out, it's most often because I wasn't watching water/salt intake and I cramped up, so I stretch to relieve the tightened muscles.

I stretch in the gym.. not so much on the rides. I don't think I will quit the stretching anytime soon

I played a lot of sports growing up and stretching was always the first part of practice or games to lessen the chance of injury. I still play sports (volleyball) in my middle age these days and I still stretch. I did get lazy and wouldn't stretch and just play and would always be very sore afterwards. I find the more I stretch the better I play and there is no soreness after playing. I also stretch before riding as well, mostly hamstrings and quads. Stretching the core(stomach, lower back) also helps me sleep more comfortably at night. If I injure something while riding MTB in the woods, I immediately stretch the muscles around the injury location out and continue for a few days afterwards and they seem to heal/recover quicker. I am a firm believer of the more you stretch the better you feel (especially carrying the spare tire around and the need to keep the back strong).
