From what I've heard on this board and other sites is that the no-name brake pads provided with a lot of bikes (such as my Specialized Allez Elite) are not that good, do not stop you that well, wear out quickly, and kill the machined surface on your rims. The horrible sound coming from my brakes makes me worry. It sounds like I'm holding rocks up against the rim. What replacement pads would you guys recommend for my no-name brakes?

I use the Kool-Stop dual-compound with the sweeper tips. There are various types of Kool-Stop brake pad/catridge designs so make sure you pick the right type. You may want to refer to this thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=58614) for some hints.

Marty,
My hands hurt while braking on my "new" bike with the el-cheapo pads. They didn't before on the stock Trek 2200 break pads or Performace brand. How does this pad fare while braking on decents?

continuing with my stupid questions: will the Dura type pads fit in my "Specialized" brake holders. Or will i also have to purchase the dura-type holders, also? and on top of that, do you think that the Dura holders will fit in my calipers?

The Kool-Stop Dura type pads seem to fit most all the Shimano brake pad holders. I've installed them in 105, Ultegra and Dura Ace holders on my bikes. If in doubt, specify the brake calipers that are on your bike to the place that you order your Kool-Stops from.

The Kool-Stop salmon pads work very well on my Dura Ace equipped Serotta, a nice progressive feel and none of the grindy, scratchy braking noise.

ok, so i'm guessing that specialized's proprietary brakes are similar to the shimanos. but where to order from?

Here's two places, I'm sure there are many more. Also try your LBS.
